Nicotine is a mild stimulant of the nervous system, allowing it to act as a relaxant to stress.
Short term affects include increased pulse and blood pressure, constricting vessels and helping some people to concentrate and relax. Tobacco is also an appetite suppressant, and it increases the metabolism.
Cigarettes put carbon dioxide into the system. And while in large doses, carbon dioxide is toxic, in low doses it helps blood not clot, which is good for people with blood conditions.
Tobacco also produces a neurotoxin used in many pesticides.

Farmers, companies, and stores can make a good profit from selling tobacco. The government can raise taxes on tobacco sales to support medical care for people who develop lung cancer and other smoking related diseases.

One night I woke up with a very sore inner ear. I went to my grandma and told her about it. She started lighting up her tobacco and told me to keep still while she was blowing smoke into my ear. Not too long after, the bug that crawled into my ear (an ant) came tumbling out. She also used to blow the smoke on my tummy whenever I had stomach ache.... the warmth made the pain go away. That's about the positive things I can think of.

Well, its making a tobbacco farmer really rich somewhere along with the people at Winston-Salem and Phillip Morris.
Then there are those rich Oncologist who treat all the cancer patients who smoked that tobbacco for years. They make a lot of money along with the pulmonologist who treat the smokers for emphysema. The drug companies who sell all the nebulizer treatments for the emphysema patients and the oxygen companies who provide the oxygen for all the smokers are making money. I guess you could call it the trickle down effect.
All the factory workers who make cigarettes are probably glad they have a job.
