We're all beautiful. Why not say it early, so that we have something to remember when we're faced with the fake girls on the cover of magazines every day for the rest of our lives?

Reading her quote again suggests that she didn't feel loved or wanted as a little girl. "Pretty" is just another word for it. Marilyn famously had self esteem problems all of her life. Perhaps if someone had told her she was pretty when she was a little girl, she would have felt more self confidence.
On another level, there is another quote, "Beauty is the eye of the beholder."
Think about someone you love dearly, perhaps a grandmother or other older relative. Do your eyes light up every time you see him or her? Do you love that face? Is that face likely to show up on the cover of "Vogue?" Perhaps not, but that face is beautiful to you.
If your feelings of self worth are all tied up in what your face looks like, you could be Marilyn Monroe and never be happy. Happiness, like beauty comes from within. There's nothing wrong with trying to accentuate the external, wearing a flattering hairstyle or clothes. And it makes sense to eat a healthy diet, exercise, and to get enough rest. Good health adds a glow that no bronzer will supply. If you are happy on the inside, kind and loving, you will be beautiful to the people who matter.

“Whenever you make a mistake or get knocked down by life, don't look back at it too long. Mistakes are life's way of teaching you. Your capacity for occasional blunders is inseparable from your capacity to reach your goals. No one wins them all, and your failures, when they happen, are just part of your growth. Shake off your blunders. How will you know your limits without an occasional failure? Never quit. Your turn will come.” Og Mandino "Being gentle means forgiving yourself when you mess up. We should learn from our mistakes, but we shouldn't beat the tar out of ourselves over them. The past is just that, past. Learn what went wrong and why. Make amends if you need to. Then drop it and move on.” ---Sean Covey “When you make a mistake, don't look back at it long. Take the reason of the thing into your mind and then look forward. Mistakes are lessons of wisdom. The past cannot be changed. The future is yet in your power.” Hugh White (1773 - 1840) “The most valuable thing you can make is a mistake - you can't learn anything from being perfect.” Adam Osborne “By ignorance we mistake, and by mistakes we learn.” Proverb “No man was ever wise by chance.” Seneca “Your mistake does not define who you are...you are your possibilities” Oprah Winfrey “Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.” Ralph Waldo Emerson “If you have made mistakes, even serious ones, there is always another chance for you. What we call failure is not the falling down but the staying down.” Mary Pickford "There is no saint without a past, and no sinner without a future." ~Shri Haidakhan Babaji

OMG...I completely know what you mean...but that quote really strikes hard because that's how it was for me. Growing up living in an all white community, no guys were trying to get me...although the attractive boys actually told people they thought I was cute! Than going to college, all types of guys, attractive, GOOD guys were falling at my feet, but I was so freaked out because I had no experience, that it was such a turn off to them and they all left...It was a culture shock to say the least. So I agree. Every girl should be constantly told theyre pretty growing up so they know their worth in all ways...even beauty.

As someone who was never a little girl but has a little girl, I think that quote could due with a little updating:
All children should be nurtured and told they are special (pretty, smart, etc) but also given encouragement for growth based on challenge. Marilyn Monroe was a troubled person. I love her movies but she was not a happy person.

It's called tough love, and everyone should go through it once in their life. Mommy and Daddy arent always gonna be there to hold your hand and defend you from bad things people might say or do. It about self confidence, if you can gain self confidence on your own, then you will make it wear ever you want to, but if you cant then you end up relying on people your whole life.

There are many quotes like that one, and untold love upon the ears for many. We all need to grow in words and actions of unconditional love, without it we stay as a walking corps, with no concept of life or reason to be a life.
