How do they get a rope bridge from one side to the other?

First a light weight line with a weight at the end is thrown across the gorge. This is called a heaving line.

The heaving line is then used to pull progressively larger lines across until the final heavy lines are across and secured.

A similar process is used to pass towing lines between ships. Start small and work up to the big cables.
