I would try not to leave my babies alone even in a play yard because it's so easy to have the best of intentions of not being gone but a second and then get distracted only to find that one second had turned into minutes. It's just not a chance that I feel comfortable with.

I found that my babies were never happy with any one location for very long. I alternated locations between a baby swing, a high chair, the crib and an indoor play yard.
I suppose they get bored and like a change of view just like we do! While they were entertaining themselves I could get some clothes folded or just relax a minute in the same room.

Leaving a baby alone when they're rolling is never really a good idea unless they're on the floor in a room where they can't get hurt while rolling and it's baby proofed with no stairs around for them to roll down. Never, ever, leave a rolling child on a raised surface even if they're buckled down like on a changing table unless you're just running across the room to grab something. Those little buggers can be squirmy so don't take any chances!

Once a baby can move from point A to point B on his own (by rolling over or any other means), his safety is very much compromised. If he's on an elevated surface he can roll himself right off. Even if he's on the floor, he can propel himself over to an electrical cord and harm himself severely. You can't allow a mobile baby to be unsupervised with unrestricted access to his surroundings.

There are two ways to get around this: one is to stay with him at every moment, which is virtually impossible. The other is to give him RESTRICTED access to his surroundings, so he can move around safely. You can do this with a playpen while he is really young, but once he gets a bit older this is a bit too restrictive. There are baby gate systems that will allow you to provide a much larger, safe space for him to play in, which will permit you to do some of your normal household chores and just check up on him every five minutes or so.

Good luck, this is only the beginning!

True never leave the baby alone, especially if he's moving around! You can use a blanket on the floor if you can monitor him constantly, if not make sure he is secure, like in a bouncy seat on the floor or if he is sitting up, in an excersaucer. That works great if you need to fix dinner or get a shower. They can see you and you can see them but they are secure with toys to play with.

I don't know if that should be taken literally. You should never leave a baby alone when it is not on the floor. If it is on the floor try not to leave the room, they can quickly find small things to put in their mouths..like pennies, or chips which can choke them You should possibly try a playpen when you need to clean or take a shower. Best of luck!!

True True True Rolling of something could lead to brain damage or even death. Never leave a baby unattended for no matter of time.
PLay is a good way to keep track of baby just make sure it is safe.

Well you dont leave them alone on a bed, sofa, changing table, but if they are on the floor on a blanket or play pen that is just fine. If they are on the floor just make sure there is nothing on the floor that they can get into and hurt themselves with.

i think the rule is never leave them on a raised surface alone when they are a baby. When my kids started rolling over I would let them be on the floor alone while i went to the bathroom or something, but I would never leave them on a bed or couch or changing table alone, even when they didn't know how to roll over yet.

When my girl started rolling I just made sure that every room had immaculate floors. By this I'm not talking about dirt, but things like coins, paperclips, bugs (we live in rural areas...lots of bugs!). I vacuumed nearly everyday (just a quick once over or spot job, nothing major). I also checked for anything low enough for her to reach (electrical cords, window blind cords, etc). They either got tied up or blocked by furniture. Also, cover elec outlet holes.
Check for clutter on low open shelves, baskets, boxes, etc. that might be reached or turned over.

After all this, I felt comfortable letting her roll around on the floor in any room of the house. If I needed to go to the bedroom to clean, I took her in there and put her on the floor. Office? Along she came.
