Because many Christians have warped ideas about Atheism.

As an athiest I don't really plan to raise my kids any one way...everyone has a right to choose...if they want to participate in a religous belief that's their choice. I don't actually plan on sharing with my kids that i'm an athiest until they are old enough to decide on their own and not just follow it because I am their dad and they want to be like me.

It bothers christians because they have this idea that athiests end up in jail all the time even though only .2% of the prison population is athiest as compared to 75% christian.

It doesn't bother me. I would never dream of telling someone how to raise their children, unlike some atheists on here who practically demand no child be taught their parents' faith. Atheists are the ones who want to control what children should be taught at home and school.

God Bless.

No one is trying to teach atheism to children in public schools don't lie to feel like you're the victims. You have Catholic schools to keep your twisted beliefs about your god. If you can't afford it don't start blaming atheists for your problems. Secondly we have separation of religion and schools for a reason to keep holler than thou ignoramuses from bullying people. People like us and atheist children who are the ones being persecuted with people who can not respect that everyone has a right to believe in something without shoving "you're going to hell" threats every time you leave your house or even read email, phone calls and etc...Public schools are publicly funded through people of non religion and religions. Why should we give up things for those who do not put their kids through Catholic school?

Because, lacking any semblance of actual morality or decency, and needing the moral crutch of "God" and an elaborate system of supernatural threats and rewards to keep them in line, "Christians" naturally assume that everybody else in the world is equally abject, and requires the same sort of moral ox-goad.

BTW, I just LOVE the argument that "atheists are raising their kids to be ostracized," as if the problem is the atheism, and not the ostracism! It's like the people who claim that homosexuals are so congenitally unhappy that they frequently commit suicide, like it has nothing to do with the fact that they're abused and harrassed their whole lives by these self-same blockheaded, bigoted hypocrites.

I'm not particularly bothered. I've seen quite a few postings on this board who think it is some form of child abuse for Christians to raise their children as Christians though.

As adults, everyone has to choose for themselves what path they wish to follow.

Christians believe differently, so they are offended at the idea, but most usually say to each his own. I say not to raise your children as an atheist or a Christian, but allow them to choose their own path.

Congrats on the toddler! you ought to have had this communicate earlier you 2 even have been given married, not weeks or maybe days remote from beginning. As an atheist, you ought to come to grips with the certainty your spouse is obligated to hold her toddler up in the Catholic faith. She ought to tutor the toddler in the ideals and practices of the Catholic Church. She can't stress the toddler to have faith any of it, yet she ought to coach it. You, on the different hand, as an atheist - all you ought to do isn't intervene with something your toddler does that pertains to the quest for an superior capability. in case you do not have faith, so be it. it would be incorrect of you to impose your disbelief upon others, particularly your very own toddler.

It definately bothers some. I have heard some people say it is a form of child abuse. Some people just cannot stand the idea that someone believes differently than what they do. Some people want to push their religion on people no matter what. The idea of religious freedom actually offends them if someone uses that freedom to make a different choice than they did.

Why does it bother them? My opinion is that they are not secure in their beliefs. If they see someone else with a different belief then it makes them feel even more insecure.

I think that it is already tough to be a kid and by raising children as atheists, you are making sure that they will be on the outside and separate from the group rather than belong. Also, I think you limit a child's realm of belief rather than encourage them to experience other possibilities.

(You asked. I was respectful in answering.)

Many Christians (not all) believe it's their duty to "save" everyone. (I say this as Christian myself.) Personally, I don't think it's my place to tell anyone else how to raise their children. As long as your children aren't abused or neglected, (and preferably raised with manners and taught to respect others) it shouldn't really be anyone else's business.
