I'm temporarily fostering a 1-year-old 8-pound Chihuahua, and I've never had such a tiny dog before. How much and how often should I feed him?

I've been feeding him the same dry Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul food that I give my dog. I normally feed my big dog twice daily, but I saw something about little dogs getting low blood sugar if they don't eat often enough, so I'd love to hear from someone who knows about the breed.

I can't leave food out because my other dog & the cats will eat it, so meals will have to be measured & at specific times.

I have a chihuahua I've raised since she was five weeks old, and when she was young I would feed her many many times a day. They use a lot of calories to keep warm, so they need to eat a lot. I reccomend as a puppy, let her eat maybe 3 or 4 small meals throughout the day, but as she gets older make it 2 a day. You really have to be careful because as they age they are likely to get weight problems. If that happens, measure the food and feed once a day.

Low blood sugar is usually only with young puppies or very small adults. At 8 lb, it should not be a problem with your foster. I suggest feeding it twice a day. Check on the bag to see how much. Different brands will suggest different amounts to feed. Usually about half a cup. Also make sure to feed small kibble. It is hard for them to chew the large kibble.

Twice a day should be fine. For an eight pounder over 1 year old, blood sugar should not normally be an issue, although some Chi's are still susceptible. If he/she seems to be hungry, or seems especially lethargic or dizzy between meals then you may want to increase to 3 times a day.

You can feed him about 3 times a day. If he still seems like hes not getting enough, then give him a snack in between meals.

How much was he fed before you fostered him? If youre not sure, why not just put food out all the time, so he can eat when he wants to? That way you'll know hes getting enough, and if he started to look chunky, you can cut back a little, and get a better idea of how much to feed.
