Braces are little brackets that are bonded to each tooth. They are connected with a wire, that is held in by two large rings fitted over your molars. The orthodontist tightens this wire every few weeks or so, and gradually your teeth will straighten.
That is the only thing braces can really do, is straighten your teeth. If you have a tooth under the gum that isn't coming in, an orthodontist may be able to pull that tooth up with braces. Generally, though, they are for asthetic purposes only.

They move your teeth into a more aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound place in your mouth by exerting a gentle but steady pressure. They're used to fix anything from severe overcrowding of teeth to just neatening up a few slightly crooked teeth. They can't completely fix all problems, it depends how bad your teeth are to start with. I had the worst overcrowding my orthodontist had ever seen, and now all my teeth are perfect except one on the bottom that he couldn't make room for.

Well, they don't fix wooden teeth if that's what you're asking.
They never did correct my math problems. And they didn't extract my wisdom teeth. Come to think of it, all they really did was line everything up with military precision and make my jaw hurt - still, 20 years later.
Technically, they don't improve teeth either. That's not their gig. The idea is to straighten up snaggle teeth.

Braces only straighten and realign teeth. The benefit is a correct bite line that reduces stress on your teeth and jaw.
They do not fix over/under bites. For that you have to use head gear or other of the like.

Basically braces are a clasp and a wire every couple of months the Dr. will make the wire shorter and it will move your teeth to the position that the Dr. wants it to. Brasses can fix under bites over bits summer teeth teeth that are sticking out or in piratically anything. I hope you are not scared. it my hurt for the first couple of day of getting them on or getting them tightened but do not worry. I had the worst teeth you can imagine and now they are movie stat strait. good luck.

They are predominately used to correct problems with your bite. If your bite is not aligned correctly, over time you will wear the surfaces of your teeth incorrectly and cause various issues with your jaw. Poor bite leads to long term dental health issues.
They are also used for cosmetic reasons.
Your teeth grow out of your jaw bone, in order to move them around you need to slowly apply pressure to move both the tooth and jaw bone that holds it. It's better to have braces when your young because your bones are softer, making it easier to move the teeth.
Once you get the teeth repositioned, you need to hold them in place for many months in order for the bone to set in it's new position. This is what the retainer does.

They correct most probs not all. My daughter wore them for 5 years and will have to wear a retainer for the rest of her life to keep them from shifting back to where they were. They made your teeth weak also from the glue they use being on them for so long.. WHen my daughter had hers removed she had stains on her teeth that I had to pay to be removed. If you just have a little over bite then I would not recomend them. But if you have more serious then it will improve your smile and ability to eat. the cost is huge. They cost me $10,000 for the braces.the upkeep of them, and all the follow up,cleaning after and then the retainers, if you lose the retainers it is $250.00 just for one.. so it is costly...
