I just got a kitten and the people who gave it to me said it was a male....but my brother who has 2 cats said it is a female. How do I tell?

A male has two little "pompoms" or balls towards the butt end and a female doesn't have these balls they just have a little slit. If you can't tell then ask the vet when you go to have its first vaccines around 8 weeks. Good Luck.

I'm assuming kitten is a tiny baby.

OK so LOOK.

Look at his/her backside. A male kitten will have 2 tiny holes one on top of the other - like a colon (:). A female kitten will have a dot and slash - just like an upside down exclamation point.

Or your vet could tell you - you did take kitten to the vet didn't you?

Take the kitten to the vet. It is really hard to tell when they are you. In a few months if its a male cat it will start to develope testicles, and the you will be able to tell, but otherwise its pretty hard. There are websites that you can check some pictures out on, but even with them you may not be able to tell.

Do not turn it onto its back to look. Hold its tail up and look at it as if it were walking away. If it looks like an upside-down exclamation mark, then it's a female - a dot and a line that are close together. If it's two more spaced-out dots, then it's male.

Very helpful picture in the middle - enlarge the picture, lift tail of kitten. (I have a little orange tabby boy.)

When male cats are small it is somewhat hard to tell. A male will have a small lump then a hole near his rectum, and a female will just have a hole.

The vet will be able to tell you but yes if you do have a boy kitten you will be able to see it's two little 'pom poms' on it's bottom.

ive seen cats who have both....espcially when they are young....wait about a month and take it to the vet....the vet should be able to tell you what gender it is....but like i said...in many cases with cats they are born with both genitals....

the younger they are the easier it is to tell. here is a web site that shows pictures of each sex http://www.petplace.com/cats/how-to-determine-the-sex-of-your-kitten/page1.aspx
