You have asked this question in the Military category, but the American Civil War was just as much of a political conflict too. If the Civil War had never happened, then there would have been a different outcome to the end of slavery (most likely not in 1865), and a different resolution to the States Rights vs. Federal Centralization and Power conflict.

Totally Different
This country that we live in today was created by the Civil War.
America was a very different place before 1860.

Rent K. Burns documentary on the Civil War.

You mean if the Federal Government never gave states' rights an almighty b!tchslapping? I suspect that states would be much chestier than they are today. We'd probably have less national identity and even more regional identity (i.e. you might be more proud of being a Kansan than you would be of being an American). Slavery probably still would have ended within the decade, because the industrial revolution (and with it progressive ideology) was already headed South. Other than that, not too much.

I still think that a civil war would have happened. Not between North and South but South against African americans.

The slavery issue would have eventually torn this country apart. I mean we're still dealing with the slavery issue today and for the most part the best scenario happened in 1865.
