My mom has *severe* arthritis in both knees. Sometimes she'll take a Lortab 10 and three Advil at night but *still* has constant pain that keeps her awake.

Any suggestions?

If your mother is able to get into a bathtub have her take a hot bath every night with 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts and soak for 30 minutes. This will help relax the muscles around the knees.

A cup of Chamomile tea is very relaxing before bedtime. Have her take 500mg of calcium and magnesium twice daily. This has a good effect on arthritic pain. Also she should drink purified water mixed with mineral water 50/50. This is going to help replenish the body with minerals.

I've enclosed a web site that has a listing of herbs that can help with the pain.

Unfortunately arthritis flare ups are extremely painful this time of year. If she has Osteoarthritis, then she can take the Lortab, but I would trade the Advil, for Aleve Liquid Gel or Tylenol Arthritis. Also, cut back on sugar, rich meats, and any alcohol. Before bed, soak in a hot tub, and don't sleep directly by an air conditioner or vent. The warmer the better.
The humidity is what is making her flare up so bad right now.

Also, and this sounds really gross, she can take Cod Liver Oil Capsules. She won't get instant relief, and she needs to take them every day, but it really does help. I am a Chronic Pain patient partly due to OA, and I whole heartedly believe in Cod Liver Oil.
Good Luck to your Mom, I know she really hurts.

MSM is a wonder supplement for Arthritis pain. My Mother, all our dogs, and I take it daily for Arthritis & swear by it!!!! You can get a bottle at WalMart for $9.00. Give your Boxer 4000mg. daily, 2000mg twice daily w/ food. It is all natural and 100% safe, you cannot OD on the stuff, it is AMAZING!!!! Google it for your own piece of mind. Also, EFA's & Glucosamine work well for Arthritis, but they don't do much for the pain, but can help w/ inflammation! I broke my ankle 10 yrs. ago and have had several surgeries, and several different pain meds, nothing has helped like the MSM has, the only reason I'm able to walk today is because of taking the MSM! Hope this helps, good luck with everything, I hope it gets better soon for you & your dog!!!!!!!!!! MSM, is all the same rather it be sold for, Humans, Dogs, Horses, or Cats! Human variety is much less expensive!!!

Does she have osteo or rheumatoid? If she has osteo, she needs to cut sugar and aspartame from her diet. Limit her intake of fruits (fructose) to those with the least amount of sugar and no more than two fruits per day. Limit alcohol and red meat. Watch dairy intake. It is imperative to cut out the sugar and aspartame. Use Stevia as a sweetener and a small amount of Splenda.

If it's rheumatoid, she needs to see a rheumatologist.

Tylenol Arthritis Strength Formula is good for osteo. Some Advil is good, but too much is bad for the body in the long run. The prescription med Diclofenac is very good.
