That can't be right - what about rental cars? If I fly to California and rent a car, it might well have CA plates, but since I don't have a CA address, I couldn't get a CA drivers license if I wanted to! There's got to be something more to this law. Possibly because it was your car and he's an ex-spouse - is he completely ex, or is a divorce still pending? I suppose there could be some technicality there that could get you. Or is his name still on the title? That could explain it.

It can't hurt for him to consult with an attorney/lawyer, preferably one who offers a free consultation. (Those kinds of attorneys are typically found under 'personal injury' as most lawyers that handle personal injury cases do defense work as well, and under 'lawyer' in yellow pages.) Perhaps he or she can let you know of the possibly penalty(s) such as points on one's record which stays on there for I believe at least five years or even longer. The attorney can let your boyfriend know if there is anything that he or she can do for him.

well, if your boyfriend re-news before the court appearance, he will just probably end up paying a small fine.
you dont need a lawyer for a civil matter.

I'm wondering why YOUR car was impounded. Don't you have a license? If you had your license, it shouldn't have been impounded.
