Judas knew the power Christ had. and he knew that he had a kingdom which was coming. But, Judas did not want to wait forever for the kingdom to come.
He sought the end of it "now" approach, by putting into action what he thought would end the Roman rule when Christ's kingdom finally came.
But, when he saw a beaten innocent christ. He saw someone who was going to his death. Once, satn had left him with the guilties, he had thought about it all night long without sleep, how he was going to make it right.
The one thing he had been doing all along, he gave up and returned. I believe he may have known that he was going to be killed by the very men who had taken Christ in the wee hours of the am, while the followers slept.
Something...... gave Judas the energy and the legs to go right back to those so-called "relgious leaders" and throw that money back at them!
To me, it was a statement that Christ did not fail when trying to convert the heart of Judas. Because he knew what Judas was doing, but he wanted Judas to face it. That's why he TRUSTED him with the little money they had.
What a powerful statement of God in Christ!!!!

Ginger

There's no point in thinking about anything since any answer would be an opinion about the mindset of a man for whom there are only secondary (at best) accounts.
I might as well say he betrayed Jesus because he needed money to pay off some gambling debts at the chariot races. It's as plausible as any answer.

Judas did what he did because he chose to listen to the enemy. He had a choice & chose to betray Jesus. This was spoken of long ago so it had to be done it was a prophecy. I wonder if another disciple would've done had Judas chosen not to.

My thinking is that he was suppose to tell people who Jesus was so that Jesus could complete a prophesy to become the Messiah. Jesus knew he was going to do it. If Judas didn't do it, someone would have had to do it.
Or it could be he was mad because Jesus didn't overthrow the government.
I like to think Jesus and Judas arranged it for the first reason. So I don't think it was a sin.

Jesus sent him to do it. How could be become a martyr and be sacrificed if the Romans couldn't find him? See "The Last Temptation of Christ" sometime.
