I had 2 chemical peels in the last week and i havent peeled or had any flaking. The first peel was only left on a few minutes because I have sensitive skin. I was told to come back and get it redone a few days later. This time the acid was left on to the point where i couldnt take the burning any longer. Still no peeling or flaking. Does this mean it didnt work?

Not necessarily. If the peel was done by a facialist, then it only affected the very top layers of skin. The goal is to loosen dead skin and remove it. Ideally, you should have minimal peeling or flaking after the procedure.

If it was done by a dermatologist, the doctor may have used a milder solution or method to prevent pigmentation problems.

Peeling After A Chemical Peel

2016-11-08 00:44:13 · answer #2 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

I just had my second chemical peel. They were a month a part. Because of some medical issues and being on aspirin they first did a light peel. I didn't see much peeling but my face seemed to swrivel up. With The second peel, which was stronger, I peeled a little and am still seeing some peeling after 4 weeks. However I have many more wrinkles now and my face seems to look like a prune. I am so nervous about this. Is this normal and when can I see results.

As others have mentioned, it may depend on the type of peel used including whether it was a glycolic peel (glycolic acid), lactic acid (derivative of milk), tca (for medium depth peel) which is usually performed by a (hopefully board-certified) dermatologist. As far as what I've read, glycolic peels are not supposed to do that much peeling or that which is not really noticeable or make that much of a difference to the skin. The tca peel, on the other hand, can have a down time of about 7-10 days of at first forming a brownish crust and then sloughing off the outer layer perhaps down to the beginning of the dermis.

The derm may have a motorized fan to be held near the face to help with the burning sensation. The tca peel also has a prep time of a couple weeks using either a glycolic product or retin-A product so that the chemical can take to the face more readilly. And btw, I was quoted a price of $800 for the tca peel, but I'm saving up for it and probably won't be able to have it done til the end of the summer since it makes the skin more photosensitive (sensitive to sun/light).

The peel that you received was perhaps not left on long enough or the ph balance was not at the correct number (sorry don't know the number off-hand :) An esthetician typically is unable to do a medium depth peel (although some 'medispas' have dr's that supposedly supervise and it can be applied by perhaps a nurse or skin care tech(?) which is when one mostly sees much more peeling.

P.S. The obagi blue chemical peel (tca mixed with a blue substance) is Not supposed to be as effective as the tca peel alone. I read in a book written by a derm that some believe that the blue peel is sort of 'gimmicky'. Just fyi.

There's a few kinds of Chemical Peel - if you go to a spa for a chemical peel, it will be very light acid and your skin might not peel. If you see a doctor then it will be different.

the word 'peel' just makes me cringe. I think they should call it, skin refresher or something. Someone in the marketing department got fired. Anyway. I would probably try and get someone to help you, preferably someone who has done it before, because I could see it going wrong in a number of terrifying and peely ways. Really I'd just pay someone to do it. But that's because I fear the peel.

It all depends on the kind of acid that was used. Some people don't actually peel or flake.
