My brother wants to study botany and go into a career in that field but thinks it might be easier to find a job after graduation if he studies in a broader field such as environmental science. What should he do?

If he wants to stay in academia or go on for a PhD, then tell him to stick with the botany degree - this is much more focused and will provide a very solid background for graduate school. If his BS is a terminal degree then I might agree with the previous posters that an env. degree will better prepare him for a job outside of academia.

Environmental Science would give you a broader knowledge base and a wider selection of careers. Plus, it would always be possible to make botany a minor so you get the best of both.

Botany is specifically focused on plants your brother will need to be very interested in plants to take this path. Environmental science is broad and if he is not sure yet what he wants to do may expose him to many different paths he could specialise in. It really comes down to what work he wants to do and work backwards along the path to get him there. If he is clear botany is the way then don't get in his way there is always demand for good botanists.
