I am worried about my 6 year old niece. Ever since birth, she has seemed a little slower in development than her peers, mentally. She didn't potty train until 4 1/2 years old, she didn't speak clearly until at least 3, and even now, some of her words sound like she is babbling. She didn't crawl until around 9 months old, and didn't walk until probably 18-20 months. She has an older sibling who always translated what she wanted for us, as they are 2 years apart, but we could never understand her very well. She throws temper tantrums like crazy, and used to scream until her face turned purple and she would literally make herself sick with tantrums. When in the store with my mom and dad, she wanders off by herself and gets lost, and doesn't seem to remember or know how she got lost in the first place. Also, my mom said that she likes to touch everything in the store, just likes to feel it. She is in kindergarten and just turned 6 in December, and has not had many problems there

that my parents are aware of, but she still acts "spacy" at home and doesn't listen at all, according to my mom. I think it is possible she has a touch of autism or ADHD? I hear about these things, but have never personally encountered them myself. What do you think?

I don't think my brother and SIL have had her examined or try to ignore that something could be wrong. They are very NOT involved with their children's development at all. I think her hearing HAS been checked however.

This sounds like autism to me. She needs to be checked out by her pediatrician and then they can see what they can do to help her. It is strange that a child that did not reach the developmental markers in the first couple years would not have had a doctor notice these problems. There are many degrees of autism some of them can be very functional in society, but there needs to be a doctor involved to get the right diagnosis. Please tell your parents that you are worried about your niece and see if they can help whoever is raising your niece get the help they need.

I wouldn't worry so much about the late walking, potty training, or clear speech; but I do think that the fact that she's still babbling at age 6 is a matter of serious concern. It does sound like she may have mild Asperger's syndrome or something along those lines. Fortunately, now that she is in school, the teachers will pick up on any serious concerns and will inform her parents that they need to have her tested. Sometimes it's hard for a family member like yourself to convey these things to a child's parents. But once a teacher or school psychologist forces them to give this matter their attention, they will be more likely to act on it.

Sounds to me like you have it under control. Have you talked to a doctor about having her checked for autism? ADHD is more about hyper levels. I don't know if ADD affects children on this level. Is she hyper, I mean to the point that she's out of breath? Is she a danger to herself, like doing things that will hurt her, but she's not scared? These are some samples of ADHD. ADD is just where their attention spam is not long enough to actually learn anything. I've never heard of it prolonging normal activity though, like walking and crawling. Check for autism and definitely check with the doctor, this doesn't sound real normal.

It sounds like she may have autism. Adhd is more of a hyper active disorder. Take her to the Dr and tell him/her what's going on. They are the only ones that can tell you. My cousins son is like that he is delayed in everything and wonders off like he is in his own little world. You could not understand anything he said. Well now he got tested and for sure has autism so he is working with people to improve his speech and things like that. He is talking better but not like he should but at least he's improving.

I defianatly wouldnt say ADHD. my 8 yr old is ADHD and she's crazy!
It sounds more like autism to me. I have a niece-in-law who is autitstic and she's just like what you're describing. delayed in all the developmental areas, she gets herself lost, and the touching thing? thats a defianate for autism. They like to feel everything they come into contact with.
I think she'll be ok though. doesnt seem to be too many problems, she's speaking, so if it IS autism, its not a severe case

Has her hearing been checked. I'd start there. But it could also be an autism spectrum disorder, only a professional will be able to diagnose it for you.
