happens to me with a brand new battery.
check the battery black red cable contacts, one of the contacts can be disconnected from the little plug

Try a new battery. If you have thrift shops in your town try them first. I went to my local thrift shop and surprisingly saw a slew of sony cordless phones for cheap.

If the phone has any age on it the battery may need replaced

How long have you had this phone? Three years or more? If so, it is probably time for a new battery.

Try a new battery, its pprobably no good.
