This question was asked on this site:
What is your opinion?

In the last several years, a handful of militant atheists have launched a frontal assault on God and religion—especially on Christianity and the Bible. Their deliberate attack on religious belief is remarkable because it ignores the lessons of history and the discoveries of modern science! Intentionally provocative books by Oxford zoologist Richard Dawkins and American writer Sam Harris are clearly "no-holds-barred, anti-religion polemics that call for the eradication of all manifestations of faith.

People are trying to bring rationality back to the world. What's wrong with that?

>Atheist, If you were attacked by a real demon would you immediately believe in god and worship him? Probably not. How would I know it was a real demon? In any case I would probably be too busy trying to defend myself to worry about the question of God's existence right at that point. >You know if there is a devil then there would have to be a God Why do you say that? I don't see that it follows. The existence of Satan does not necessitate the existence of God, nor does the existence of a single demon necessitate the existence of Satan. You seem to be following a rather long chain here without supporting any of the steps inbetween. >ITS NOT A DREAM. You might have a hard time convincing me of that at the time.

Voltaire, used to say: "I don't like what you are saying, but I will fight strongly to let you tell you opinion".
Atheists (militant ? do they have a party or an organisation?) just say what they think. It's not new. Who has studied Philosophy knows well that, since the time of ancient Greece, Man is trying to understand: who is the Creator, how all the world was generated, what's the role of Men. Up to now nobody can give you an answer which could be rationally verified. To believe is an act of Faith. So let them shout and if you like give your answer. Peace with you.

Sweety, I agree with you. There are many more websites that state this as well...they give questions to ask believers, and what to use as arguments against religion. There are books for them as well. I see them deny over and over that they are in any way organized...some may not be...but there is an organized effort going on to destroy Christianity and we are blind if we do not see it. Why else would they be on a forum for religion and spirituality...they claim they have neither.

I know this is not about ALL atheists.

I know some Christians are just as bad.

I try to be fair and tolerant, but sometimes even I am pushed beyond what I can endure. One thing...for you and me and a lot of other Christians...the atheists are foolish to think they could budge us from what we truly believe.

This has nothing to do with other atrocities that are being committed in this world currently. They are not financed by, nor santioned by, Christians of today. So atheists and other haters...YOU GET OVER IT. You do nothing but spout hate and venom. Does that stop any of the awful things done to others in this world.

I would like to take this opportunity, now that the dust has settled a bit, to remind you that your freedom to argue religion, cultism, agnosticism, atheism, Christianity, (see big C) or any thing you wish is guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States of America and protected by

The Combined Armed Forces of America. They deserve your support. Thank you. Raymond

We have been quiet along time, and are far less militant than any religious group. No one is forcing you to read their books or their speaking engagements.

We certainly have a right to our opinions, and it is about time we spoke up. Atheism is not a disease. The more people the openly state there beliefs, the easier it is for others to do so.
It has not been socially acceptable to openly say you are an atheist until very recently. Personally I applaud them, the religious right has way to much power in our society, the only way to change that is to stand up for our rights as citizens.

If atheists are "MILITANT," what adjective do you use to describe the warring religious extremists around the world, those who take up arms and inflict attacks on troops and civilians? No atheists have been accused of such a tactic to promote their ideas--only the believers.

Criticism is hardly militancy. Using such a word is an ad-hominem attack against people rather than addressing the ideas. It strongly suggests that you HAVE no argument against their ideas and are thus reduced to criticizing and demonizing the proponents' strategies.

MILITANT?????

Where are the gun-wielding atheists you speak of ?

That is either a ridiculous exaggeration or a blatant slur. You make it sound like atheists are gunning down innocent christians in the street every day for their beliefs, and this is simply not true, so I really resent the militant implication.

History has however shown us that the reverse is true, the christians have had campaigns and crusades to kill unbelievers, so if you really want to throw the word militant around you should use it in a more accurate context.

I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you used the word in error, without thinking about what it meant, and simply accepting it's place in the commentary because your trusted leaders told you it was true. I strongly urge you not to fall into the trap of accepting what you are told at face value again.

Atheists and pro-atheism books have always been around. If atheists seem louder now, it's only a reaction to how religious zealots are louder now than they were 20 years ago. This isn't the first time you've seen these arguments in the news. Any time some theocratical bill is being proposed, the debate ensues.

Wow... they wrote words. They asked for people to consider a different point of view. That is all.

That's not "militant." There is no Dawkins Infantry Division.

Sounds like the ravings of a theist who feels threatened by the atheist movement in some way.Maybe people should stop playing the victim.
"Oh, atheists ask me not to indoctrine my child from the second they are born..."
"Oh, atheists ask me questions about the fundamental nature of God.."
"Oh, atheists are for the first time speaking out about the injustice of a world where religion is starting to infringe on government policy..."

Get over it. Seriously. Not everyone thinks like Christians, but that doesn't mean they are out to actively DESTROY Christianity... they want people to think for themselves. That's a noble cause.

It is a sign of the times. There is no doubt in my mind that atheism is going to become a strong force to contend with. What is ironic is that atheists believe that getting rid of religion will solve the world's problems, when in reality, their godless agenda is what is going to be the final downfall of mankind. I have seen questions here on this forum asking if Christians are trying to bring about the Battle of Armageddon quicker. The answer is that we don't have to do anything. Atheism is doing it for us.How ironic is that? What is going to be the worst and bloodiest war in history is going to be waged by people who either don't believe in God or simply don't want to acknowledge Him. More people are going to die during this war and during the period before this war than all other wars combined in all of history. And it's not God's people who are going to be the blame for all that will happen during this period, because we won't be here, just like atheists wished for. So,for those who say religion is evil and caused all the wars in the world, beware. Because the war you are working your way towards is going to make all other wars look like child's play by comparison.
