When that embracing during sex is also the two that are hugging the soul...not just the body.

As far as your question of " how " does this happen . . .When you are with one who can be confidently vulnerable...let their soul open to another and allow the soul to be touched. When conversation is shared through touch, words " spoken " with the eyes . . . Soul speech...A very clear " language " that has no words. We are souls in a physical body that feels emotions, touch. To blend the soul with the experience of touch...that's very powerful. Soul "orgasms"...experienceing pure joy. Not all bring the soul into the pleasures of sex...yet it's a very powerful experience...and very beautiful, natural, real...speaking from experience.

Seriously, sex should be spiritual. The mention of Tantra is a good start. It's more than just "dirty" pictures from the Kama Sutra, there's an underlying philosophy there that both partners need to be on the same page about. When you can know yourself through your partner's eyes and be joined together in bliss before the gods as the world melts away, i think that is when it becomes spiritual. Of course this takes a great amount of trust and should only be attempted with a spouse or other monogomous partner where y'all are connected in more ways than just sexually. It can be a really beautiful thing. There's also some invoking that can be done, but that gets more into "role playing" if you ask me ;)

I would say sex becomes spiritual when the participants do...

How it becomes spiritual? ... by enriching and cementing two people's love and devotion to each other, and drawing them closer to God, because of their love.

Sex also creates energetic bonds between two people... these bonds strengthen the commitment between the two people who hold a family together - the mother and the father.... families are a sacred institution.

Sex becomes a spiritual act when it ceases to be an act of physical self-gratification, and becomes more concerned with blessing the other person (and strengthing the family).

Hmmm, thanks for letting me think about that. :~)

Tantric Sex can be spiritual.
Sex in the Great Rite can be spiritual.
Sex of any variety can be spiritual.
You get out of it what you put into it. If all persons involved go into it with their spirit as well as their bodies it will be a spiritual experience.

Blessings,

Sex, when done right, is the ultimate connection between two people. It's an experience that even the most skilled of writers can only fail to describe with words.

If that's not spiritual, I don't know what is.

In "The Butcher's Wife", Demi Moore tells a story about the split apart. That way back, at the beginning of time, man and woman were one being, joined as one, in total bliss. Then an outside agent split them in two, and forevermore each seeks the other half, in order to once again feel the bliss and the union of being reunited again...to make love to your other half is a very spiritual union......

(LOL Then they find each other, and commence to yelling, "Oh, God! OOOOOHHHHhh GOOOOOOD!!!! Guess by then, it has become spiritual :)

After reading these answers it appears the common interpretation of spiritual is "the right thing to do" and common interpretation of physical is "the wrong thing to do". These are both totally erroneous. Every act done by man has a physical aspect, the act itself, a mental aspect, how one perceives the act, perhaps the moral judgement and a spiritual aspect, the idea that supports or motivates the act. That "trinity" exists in all of our activities.
Murder and rape are indeed spiritual acts, however evil they may be judged. .
To answer your question, I would say, when is it correct action and when is it wrong action? The way I understand it all actions are spiritual. The word "right" and "wrong" are words we use in our assessment of spiritual qualities.

Sex is a physical act and not a spiritual act. When we indulge, it is for our sensual self-gratification only.

If the act can bring us stronger in our spiritual levels, there then would be no harm in indulging in sex outside marriage also, so far as the pleasure is there in it.

Sex is not a taboo, but it is not for our spiritual goal.

And I love sexy thoughts.
