You don't say how your friend is disfigured. Face? Body? Accident? Burns?

More than 20 years after a car accident that sent me through the windshield, I still have scars on my face. I had hundreds of stitches.

I had plastic surgery. It reduced the appearance of the scars but they are still there and still visible. I knew that my face would always be scarred. I was realistic about my expectations and I didn't expect a miracle. You know what? I look fine. I don't look like a monster. I look like someone who went through the windshield of a car.

Your friend may need some counseling to come to terms with it. I did. It helped immensely. You see, we are ALL scarred in some way...with some people, it's just more visible, that's all.

It takes time...sometimes, it takes a lot of time. Don't treat your friend any differently. Just be there. Your friend will need support. One more thing...don't give false hope. That would be the most devasting thing of all.

Your acceptance of your best friend's condition will help the person in a big way. By acceptance, I mean that you don't ignore her problem, but rather you treat her the same way you always have.

Obviously you sympathize. Now try being strong for her. If she is required to go out in public, for instance, maybe you'll go with her so she won't feel so alone if strangers stare, etc.

She probably doesn't need cheering up. Most likely, she needs what you are trying to do. I am touched at your concern for your friend, and wish you success.

Friendship is an incredibly powerful gift.

Good luck. Be brave.

Give her a book called "A Course In Miracles" as a gift. This is a non-denominational, non-religious book that will allow her to have a deeper awareness of herself. One of my favorite lessons in the book goes something like this...

"I am not a body, I am free, for I am still as God Created Me"

The book can be purchased at Barnes and Noble, or Bookmans, and Amazon has it for less than $20. Get the hardcover by Helen Schumaker.

You'll make a positive impact in your friend's life that will last her forever.

Depends on how disfigured and what part of her it is. Maybe find a support group or get individual counseling, talk with a plastic surgeon maybe.

As a healing process in the case of accidental disfigurementation, a person is going to need a lot of after care therapy wich in almost every time includes physoligacal counceling.
Your support and understanding is going to go a long way with your friends recovery in them knowing from you that you know they are still the person you learned to like/love.

how is she difigured? it sometimes depends. anyway, she needs to build self confidence. she should try to find something she's good at, and build on it. i'm not a therapist or anything either, but she could probably use your help too.
