the bible encourages men to uncover their heads...

"Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head."
(1 Corinthians 11:4)

"For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man."
(1 Corinthians 11:7)

Well the etiquette is and always has been that men should not wear hats in church- period. Women can wear hats. This is because many times- especially a hundred ago- women have to pin their hats to their hair, they used to wear their hair pinned up under the hat. Taking off the hat will mess up her hair. Besides the hat is generally part of her outfit.

I think that if the women is wearing a dressy hat, that she should be able to keep it on in the church, but if she is wearing a hat that is more sporty like a baseball cap, then No she should not wear it in church, or during prayers, or the national anthem etc...

The original idea of hats (for females) in church was the "covering" issue referred to in the New Testament.

Pentecostal and some other apostolic religions believe that hats are not necessary because those females wear long hair as their covering.

It is bad manners to wear a hat indoors whether you are at church or not. Now I know that women can get away with it, but that is the etiquette rule for guys.

Sure why not? As long as they're not oversized and obnoxious. Now baseball CAPS would be a different story just because it's TOO casual it seems. But ladies hats or dressier gentlemen's hats would be fine.

I think a hat has as much right to be in church as anyone else.

I was raised to believe men always took their hats off inside (any building). being ex-military and an ex-cop, I still feel that way.

If a woman wants to wear a nice hat that was always acceptable, (that is the lady thing).

Gosh that kinda shows how old I am getting.

It is common courtesy to remove your hat whenever you enter a building.

If they are not flamboyant, then they should be fine.
They should not be worn just to bring attention to yourself, for church is not the place for that foolishness.
