ship construction techniques up to the 20"s were based on riveting plates together....you'd slightly overlap a plate, drill holes, sledgehammer in red hot rivets...a very strong but somewhat long process.

By the time WW2 ended mostly everything was weld3ed together..much quicker and if done right just as strong or stronger.

The other big change was modular or mass production...look up Henry Kaiser and the Liberty ships........instead of building a ship one piece at a time from the keel up, imagine taking a ship and cutting it into six or so pieces from side to side.......in mass production one area of a yard would build the bow, all the decks and hull....another area would be building the next 50 feet...eventually you'd have all the pieces..which might be up to 1000 tons pushed together . welded together and off you go.......the record for producing a 4,000 ton Liberty cargo ship from nothing to ready to sail away was something unbelievable like 4 days. Yes, 4 days.

The biggest disasters revolved around welding.......some Liberties were put together by unskilled workers , at a time where it was thought that if a Liberty made one voyage to England then that was good and two was gravy.....so some Liberties got out into bad weather and broke up from bad welding......

best warships all time? Good Lord that's a huge topic.....but the Iowa class battle ships designed in 1939 were still active in Desert Storm and two could still be brought out of mothballs today to kick *** and take names......

From 1920- 1941 most new Naval Construction was done by civilian contractors and companies as far as base construction and building. From 1942 to present day a good place to look for information is on The Seabees. The Seabees were formed after Pearl Harbor and have been doing construction ever since. War and peacetime construction, humanitarian relief, disaster recovery, a small detatchment of Seabees even loaded the A-bomb onto the Enola Gay. There is alot of information out there. As far as the shipbuilding and the best ships I am not sure but try searching on yahoo or google for Navy shipbuilding, they are all built by civilian companies.

Two big construction projects stand out in my mind. In the 40's, they did major jobs around the world. I was stationed at Naval Amphibious base Corondo in the 90's. That whole strand was built by the Seabees. In addition they connected North Island and built the air base there.

The largest constructiion job they ever did was to blast Cubi Point out of solid rock on the Philippine Island of Luzon near the Subic Bay Naval Station.
