A couple of the previous answers are good, but the one thing people always forget is attitude. If you approach something new knowing it's going to work,it will most likely work for you.Be sure you don't go below 1200 calories, start exercising slowly and gradually increase the amount,do some yoga or other kinds of stretches, but be sure to KNOW you're going to lose weight. It really helps. And keep the positive attitude when you hit plateaus, and you will eventually start losing again.Aim for healthy, not just thin.Good luck, even though you CAN do it.

Anyone that tells you anything about low carb diets is insane. Your brain uses complex carbs to exist. My grandmother went on that diet, hoping to lose weight, then went to the doctor to find that her cholesterol was off the charts. I even tried the diet and had horrible migraines because of it, which now I know the reason I had them. You compare South Beach to Atkins and they claim it's not the same--but when you look at it, it is. For the record, Atkins died and was overweight when he died.
Now to answer your question, the best diet to have is one that includes a lot of fruits and vegetables, preferably raw because cooking them cooks away some of the nutrients. Limit, or avoid, animal products. There are many replacements that will give you the yogurt, milk, cheese, and meats that you normally would miss. I cooked chili with TVP in it and my room mates thought it was beef. So don't buy into people saying it doesn't taste the same. Also for calcium and iron, there are MANY vegetables that give you more of both essentials than milk or meat could ever offer. Generally if you're wanting to lose weight you'll eat less calories than you burn off and if you want to maintain your weight you'll eat the same amount or slightly more calories than you burn off. Limit the amount of sodium, soda, caffeine, and sugar you intake but worry more about calories and fat than carbs. Totally make an effort to take fiber supplements and any other supplement that meets your needs. I take biotin, iron, and fiber but I avoid multivitamins because B-12 makes you eat more.
Add more exercise in you routine. It can be as simple as walking to the mailbox rather than driving, or doing some chores while listening to music. Don't worry with all that boring stuff--find something you love doing. If you like to hike go for it. If you get a rush off of dancing to 80s music that you don't want anyone else to bear witness to, make everyone leave, and dance to your heart's desire. It can, and will, work--just believe in yourself as a capable person able to obtain what you want in this, and all other aspects of life, and you'll succeed.
Best wishes! :)

I have tried a whole lot of things to lose weight over the years. i have taken every miracle pill out there and tried a lot of the weight loss centers. I have never seen much weight loss with pills. The two things that i lost the most weight on were Weight Watchers and Medical Weight loss. I kept the weight off the longest on Weight Watchers because i was able to eat everyday foods and after awhile of being on it, i was able to recognize what i could and could not eat. Medical weight loss helped me take the weight off quickly but was not in my budget to stay on for as long as i needed too. also i was depriving myself of the foods i loved. There is something new coming out that i saw a commercial for. and being the "give anything a shot once" kind of person that i am, i am going to try it. check out myalli.com. Good luck! It's always been one of my ongoing battles and i too hope to someday defeat it!

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Lose maximum weight with six meals a day
six meals a dayWhat I am doing these days is eating meals 6 times a day. Health specialist also recommends that Men should take 6 meals per day and women should take 5 meals per day. When we take our meals in this way, we get a lot of benefits that help us to reach to a highest fitness level.
Firstly eating six-time day helps us to increase our metabolism rate, as we are able to burn more calories during the day.
Secondly we feel ten times better by eating smaller meals frequently during the day. This is because eating 5 to 6 meals per day helps maintain a balanced blood sugar level, preventing hunger attacks.
It also helps to build and maintain muscles. The more muscle we get the faster our metabolism becomes. Frequent meals help promote muscle growth by regulating insulin levels and providing a steady flow of amino acids into the muscle cells.
Eating frequently also helps efficient use of minerals and vitamins. With frequent eating our body becomes more effective in processing these nutrients. Include more and more protein, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats in to your diet.
But eating five to six times a day, you will have higher energy level, Increased muscle growth and speeding up of your metabolism. So all need to combine this healthy plan with our exercise program as away to really burn some fat.

here is some food for thought I have battled my weight for now 4 years. Went to the Dr. she says any diet that ends in diet does not work. Cut calorie intake to 1200 a day and incorporate atleast an hour of exercise a day ( 5 days a week) I have found this to be the best for me I am dropping fat and toning muscle fast. I cut out white foods (rice, bread, mayo, pastas) Natures Own makes a light bread 110 cals for 2 slices.
