Generally speaking because we are able to be logical and not just believe something because we are told or led that is the truth. We actually search and find the actual truth and question inconsitencies.

Where did you get this ideal? Many of our presidents have been or are very religious men. Many college professors are deep into their religion and after the Va. shootings turned to God to find the strength to go forward. The graduation last week was one that will never be forgotten when one of the shooting victims said it was God that got him through it. I am not saying you are not an intelligent person. I am sure you are but then again if you really were you would know that weather you believe or don't you can be intelligent or not. Being educated is something you chose in life just as choosing weather to believe in God or not. By the way religion has no fairy tales if you were an educated person you would know this.

~~~ Siren ,,,, As a well travelled atheist I can attest to the fact that your question is absolutely Contrary to my personal experience. I would agree with your question if you replace the word "intelligence" with "ignorance". The reason being that atheists are usually less educated than those that have been exposed to an Organized Religion. Usually because the Religious People had the Only Book in town. Unfortunately for the atheists it was a book full of useless information,,, for them,,, and Heretics tend to be shunned by The Believers.
Gee I don't know. All that stuff written by mentally challenged individuals like Aquinas and Augustine. I wonder how many of these intelligent atheists have read any of it? Or could? Personally I never took "I haven't personally seen it so it can't exist" as a particularly intelligent approach to reality.
If someone told me there was a huge green monster walking down Main Street, I'd probably just go back to what I was doing. I mean, logically it couldn't be true. But if dozens of people going by my house told me there was a huge green monster walking down Main Street, I would probably suspend my logical disbelief and go see for myself. That would be the only intelligent thing to do.
Could you show where, overall, that Atheists are more intelligent than those who believe in religions? I know one single study that says those who don't follow Mainstream Religious Ideas tend to be more intelligent.... but that isn't ALL people who have religious beliefs. So, could you provide this study that you got this information from?
Studies may show that generally atheists are more intelligent, but I have known atheists that are every bit as ignorant as religious fundamentalists. All of this aside, the answer is simple: Religious people have a tendency to 'guard their faith', and are threatened by any 'knowledge' that may oppose their faith. So their way of thinking is more discriminate in only believing dogmatically or doctrinally, therefore right or wrong, their minds are naturally more closed-minded. I don't think it's a matter of intelligence though, but a matter of conscious ignorance. They choose or discriminate their knowledge base. Bless their little hearts.
I am not sure that having faith in something is the same as a fairy tale. You can choose to believe in what ever you wish. But I believe the smarter thing to do would be to live my life as if there is a God and die and find out there isn't, than to live my life as if there isn't a God and die and find out there is. The choice is up to you but I think it would be (and this is just my opinion) the INTELLIGENT decision to believe. God saves all and I will continue to believe.
Because some religious people do not accept certain aspects of science because it conflicts with their beliefs (such as evolution which goes contrary to the whole 'god created everything in 7 days' thing). And so, they choose not to learn or study that information.
(And these possible reasons are more off the wall) Also, during the time in which they are in church, youth group,etc they might have been somewhere else learning. They might be spending their learning time devoted to helping others or witnessing instead.
Atheists are a large group of people including some intelligent and some not so intelligent, just like every other group of people.
I'm getting very tired of this question stating that one group of people are somehow more intelligent than another.
I am not atheist and that is a HUGE generalization. There are many intellectuals, scholars, scientists and professionals in every field from business to manufacturing who are theists of some kind.
If you don't like being stereotyped then don't fall into the same silly trap.
Some atheists are not that intelligent. It's not some kind of exclusive club that only those with high IQs can get into.
