Rotts really aren't big barkers. Maybe its because of their intimidating looks they don't have to??

My first rott who passed away last year almost never barked unless there was really something that needed to be barked at. So when he did bark we really checked into what he was barking at. Just got a new rott puppy about a month ago and he barks all the time. I am hopping he will grow out of it.

Puppies should not bark at strangers until a year or more unless they are aggressive to an extent that is more than average people can handle. If you encourage a "guard" breed to bark as a pup they often escalate to biting at 18 mos to 2 yrs. Rotties are not as noisy as some breeds. My GSD and Rott only barked when someone was touching the fence or in the front yard but my Dobe, who was encouraged to bark as a pup, barks at people in their own yard minding their own business. A bad barking habit is not easy to break either.. The Dobe is much better than he was but not as good as my other big guys..

Don't worry. Some dogs don't bark. My dog is 2 years old, I've had him since he was about 3 months old and he has only barked a few times all together, and that was when some strange man was trying to get near me. Don't worry about it. Just love him and take care of him and he'll be all good.

I had a very similar experience with my Great Pyrenees--another guardian/working dog breed. She didn't bark until she was about 9 or 10 months old. We did all the puppy socialization, walking, puppy parks, etc. I don't know if she just didn't get the instinct or just was relying on us to fend off intruders. When she finally did bark, it scared me to death! You'll be surprised at how deep his bark will be. Sounds like your pup just hasn't seen anything worth barking about. He's still young. Give him time. Believe me, once he starts, the problem will be making him stop. Most dogs love a good bark.

Rotties are not great barkers anyway. I have no doubt that he could make enough noise if he saw something exciting.
My youngest Dane never barked until he was 6 months old, and when he did, he scared the daylights out of me, with the roar that came out of him!

I have had rotts my entire life, they are not barkers. It always surprises me when my girl barks, she does it so infrequently. Has he ever barked? If not, that is something you should bring up with your vet.

No idea, but I would love it! Imagine, a dog that doesn't keep you awake at 3 AM barking his head off!

not all dogs bark all of the time, some like the one you have, if they are to be a guard dog-- are the best kind, the intruder doesnt know that hes there until his cojones are in the dogs teeth. sneaky devil

Your breed of dog is not a barker, unless there is an intruder in your home. Then you will hear him, trust me I know.
But if you are truly concerned about him have him checked out by your vet...
