It contains a story of a man who gets drunk and impregnates both of his daughters after his wife dies.

There are incidents of people eating their own children.

Children are sacrificed on an altar to a god.

Animals are ritually sacrificed.

Two of the men seem to have a homo-erotic relationship and one states to the other that 'your love far exceeds that of a woman'.

The book also contains many occult practices, such as divination, conjuring, and speaking with the dead.

There is a bizarre poem about incest with a man's underage sister, and comments about horse semen.

The book also openly promotes slavery and polygamy, and the keeping of royal brothels?

Several times, characters in the book have sex with their step-mothers or the mistress of their father or other relatives.

Prostitution is openly displayed.

Murders and lynch mobs are common in the book.

Should this vile book be kept out of the hands of children?

I do not believe any book should be banned. It should be up to the parents to make the decision on what their children can and can not read or see.

There is a huge list of banned books from public schools. I'm sure at least a few religious books are in there too. It's interesting because they'll ban books that are harmless, but they'll let us read stories about men having 20 wives and abusing half of them and what not. And also of a father killing his son because his tribe pressured him into it (we had to read a book like this in 11th grade. I don't recall the title, but it was disturbing). We also read a book where a rape scene was involved, which too was disturbing especially because it was between 2 school aged boys.

Without having read others' answers, I feel fairly certain that the book in question is the Bible! I am generally opposed to censorship so would not be for banning it on principle. I am, however, against its teaching in public schools under any guise whatsoever. On the Today show this morning, a segment was presented about the (apparently unprotested) course being offered in some states' public schools in which the Bible is taught as an historical influence upon culture; however, in my opinion, every attempt to introduce the Bible into the schools, under whatever pretense, is a political ploy by the Religious Right to undermine the separation between church and state and to influence impressionable children to convert to Christianity. Biblical studies should be confined to church schools, period!

Any random passage without the appropriate context can be seen as "vile". These need to be taken in the right context.

Why is it that people who are trying to prove Christianity wrong go directly to the BIble for information, but when give nverses from the same Bible believe the information to be false?

Yes get it out. The schools banned 1984 and that should be required reading.
And don't forget about killing your daughters, sons, and animals. Also there was all that orgy sex. And rape was common and acceptable.
Anyways it was writen by mankind (no women authors) so I think it should be banned for sexism

Why ban it? It's so unbelievably long and boring they wouldn't read it anyway (assuming they were not harrassed into reading it or made to feel left out by not reading it)... Catch 22 is much more interesting and inciteful.

might as well let them read it.

I could use this as an arguement for why I can't buy into any particular church or why religions are accused of being outdated.

Silly man, only science books, or literature that promotes rational thought, should be banned.
