My car was backed into a tree. It was very dark, and couldn't see. It broke my light out and also damaged the right of the bumper above the muffler. I have an 06 Chrysler 300C. If I report this to my insurance, do you think my rates will go up? I purchased the lights online last night because the factory ones would be outrageous. I am thinking about just paying for the car to be fixed myself, just so it won't be reflected on my insurance. What does everyone else think?

Hello, I am sorry to here about your accident. I am a licensed insurance agent in Michigan. The answer to your question is Yes. Even though that accident doesn't seem like it was your fault insurance companies see those as at-fault accidents. Therefore at your renewal you will be hit with a premium increase and you will have to pay your deductible. I would get an estimate for the damages and see what it comes out to. If it is a lot of money and you would benefit from paying your deductible and having your rates increase then you might want to turn it in. Otherwise it might be best to bite the bullet. I would estimate that you rates might go up around 20% or maybe a littler more.

If you do file a claim with your insurance company it will be considered an at fault collision loss. There is a possibility your premiums would increase. On top of that you'd be responsible for your deductible as well. Therefore, since you already bought the lights online, you might as well just get the vehicle fixed without getting your insurance involved. Most likely in the long run - it will be cheaper.

Yes, it is quite likely your rates might go up. I'd say if you can fix it yourself for less than a grand, do it.
