at the very least, she must have a passport. infancy does not exempt anyone from a passport/visa requirement. a visa may be required. if you and you infant are the same nationality and you require a visa, then your child needs one too.

Citizens of the United States don't' need a visa to enter the United Kingdom.

I have a British passport and my 5 month old has a South African passport, Want to travel from SA to UK, I dont need a visa but do I need one for my son? Tried everywhere cant get info on this. Tried contacting Visa office in UK gov and keep getting cut off as there are no advisors availible?? Can anybody help??

You don't say where you are from. Some countries do, some don't. If you have the same nationality as your infant, and you need one, then the child will as well.

It depends on how long you are planning on staying in the UK. If you are just visiting, you both need passports. If you are staying longer, you might require a visa for each of you. This link should be able to tell you if you need them or not.

The answer is "it depends". Generally speaking if an adult requires a visa then so does the infant. Please see http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk which explains the rules reasonably clearly.
