Excellent question. How do we determine good and evil (aside from those who think its all in the Bible). Certainly religion may play a part, but doesn't society, our peers, our environment, our upbringing, where we live...all play a part as well.
When we are given a task to decide what is good and what is evil, can we keep bias out of our answers. I think not.

If individuals should be free to make those determinations for themselves, what should happen to the pedophile who truly "loves" children and seduces a dozen 3 year olds.
He/she really, truly it's a beautiful thing to sexualize children, therefore it could not be evil.
How would we as a society then govern ourselves? The rule of law/fear of punishment is moot to people who do things society considers evil as it is now. What then?

We are free to do a lot of things. If you are not saved, how would you
HONESTLY
be able to determine good from evil?

We certainly are free to determine what is good and evil, but that doesn't always mean we're right about it.

Are we capable? If a man determines in his mind that it is okay to kill is it then okay? If we live according to our idea of righteouness we fall short even if we live according to God's law we still fall short as we are not perfect and it is the reason Christ came to the world. The law demonstrates our need for a moral compass and our need for God. Salvation comes from Jesus Christ.

If I can validly decide that it would be good fore me slit an old lady's throat in an alley for $5 to get a hamburger, then yes. If not, then no, morality isn't a question that we get to determine.

Many people do. There is a standard, however. That is contained in the Word of God.
When people abandon the Word of God, they end up doing like Israel did during the period of the Judges.
"...every man did that which was right in his own eyes." (Judges 21:25)
(Kinda like us now, isn't it?)

We do. This is why some things in the bible that were condoned (ie, slavery, sexism) are no longer considered good. We pick-and-choose.
