And to think it was my thought that nobody else considered this issue!

It absolutely irks me when in my place of employment I've taken more random drug tests than anyone could ever imagine.

To see how some abuse the government assistance programs is absolutely pathetic when I struggle on the paltry wages and maintain my lifestyle within the laws!

Write your state officials and tell them how you feel....I have!

Best wishes!

While everyone here would agree that there are welfare scumbags out there who do (or sometimes make) drugs, the system is broke -- that would mean diverting some of the benefit money and making it testing money (new staff, new offices, vehicles, and we haven't even gotten to the lab fees), and all those senior citizens and people just down on their luck will be not only further screwed and starving, but also suffer the suspicion, hostility, and indignity of peeing into a cup at some enforcer's demand. Innocent people are policed enough. The poor, doubly so.

Everybody can be subjected to random tests be they on government assistance or in the civil service so that equality must be achieved as enshrined in the Constitution.

What if some of these people before getting on assistance WERE indeed addicts but want to change their life? What if they didn't get that assistance because of their previous addiction, and the law stated that they'd have to be removed from the rolls permanently? Those people would not be aided, making it harder to turn their lives around and would encourage drug use among the working poor.

Any idea how much it costs to do drug tests? The administrative, logistic and lab costs would consume massive amounts of budget. A Dept. of Urine Testing would have to be created.
On a slightly different tack, why can successful people get away with 3 Martini business lunches?

Damn good question. If you're recieving government assistance it should be required that you take drug tests at least once a week as part of the welfare program. I'm with you 100%

I agree they should test them. But the cost would be crazy. And with the exception of pot most drugs leave the body in 3 days. To randomly test them we'd have a bunch of people (paid employees) driving around collecting piss. Not practical.

Perhaps the answer is not to test those on public assistance....but to STOP testing those on the job. If someone can do their work, doesnt come to the jobsite intoxicated, then why is it ANYONES business what they do in their free time. Stop thinking like a facist....this is America and we are supposed to be free. If you think that some college kid, in his own room, smoking his own pot is hurting you in any way shape or form YOU ARE WRONG. Live and let live. I think that eating too much fat in your diet is nasty, but if you want to pig out on brownies and fried chicken ITS NONE OF MY BUSINESS.

It doesn't pass the smell test to people who would be inclined to think the requirement has racist motives.
