There's an excellent page on this at:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/

He currently covers Ubuntu 7.04 with the Alternate CD but the basic info still applies. Even if you use the Desktop (or "Live") CD you might want to take a look at his site. He covers a lot of info about dual-booting with Windows.

It's helpful to also make a FAT32 partition so you can easily swap files between the two OSs. He explains how to do that as well. (You'll then have to mount the partition with read & write permissions.)

If your using the Desktop CD the partitioner is GUI based and a litttle different, but the same basics apply. For that you need to boot into the CD and start the installer which will then take you into its partioner.

Just a note: Many of the future questions you will have have already been covered. Try searching (that's how I originally found the dual-boot site) or check out the Ubuntu forums or Ubuntu Dapper Drake Wiki.

I'd suggest going with Feisty Fawn 7.04 instead. It has a lot more updated software in its repository that's easily ready to install.

Ubuntu 6 is an old version. You want 7.04. It installs just like any other operating system. After you have downloaded the file, burn it to a CD, put the CD in the CD drive and start your computer. Ubuntu will start to load. There are a few question that you must answer, but for the most part, it loads all by it's self.
