It states in the Bible for example:
(John 15:16) Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

The prayer must contain this information -- but if it is in the beginning, in the middle or at the end matters not.
Also the prayer is addressed to God not to Jesus -- Jesus is the go between, the mediator between men and God. For this reason do we pray to God in Jesus' name.

Because of these Scriptures:
Eph 5:20 "Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."
Col 3:17 "And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him."
Our prayers should be addressed to God the Father as Jesus instructed in Matt 6:9, "After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name." We close our prayers in "Jesus' name." In closing a prayer a Christian is recognizing that Jesus Christ is our Savior and "advocate" between us and God the Father.
"In the Name of" something means "by the authority of" - as in "open up that door in the name of the law (or "the King")

Christians believe that their right to pray comes through the actions and authorityof Jesus. And then he currently resides in heaven where one of his jobs is to act as the Intercessor for prayer - presenting it to his Father for us.
When a Christian prayers "in the name of Jesus", they are acknowledging that it is only through him that we have the right to make the petition, and that he will be the one who presents it to his father. We do it by his authority.

Well, basically, its because that is what Jesus asked us to do. We should ask the Father in his name. Jesus is our advocate before the Father. He pleads our case. He is also God's representative in the World.

Christians were told by Jesus to pray in His name.
John 14:13,14 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the son. If you ask anything in my name, I will do it.
John 16:23,24 And in that day you will ask me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give to you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

Jesus actually walked the earth. Can't say he doesn't exist if real people saw Him and His miracles. It was His choice to die on the cross for our sins. To give us a choice to ask for forgiveness to live with Him eternally in Heaven.
