I am in the process of accepting a position at United to work in cusomer service. They say the starting salary is $9.47 per hour. I make $18.00 per hour at my current job. Is salary negotiable? I wasn't sure because I have never worked for a union before.

"Is salary negotiable?"
For an airline union job? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Such jobs are covered by union contract and the pay scale is negotiated under their collective bargaining agreement negotiated by their union. Pay is FIXED and raises come only with tenure annually or a new contract. If you are concerned about the pay, contact United and ask them for the pay scale progression.

***TAKE NOTE***
You should also be aware that your work schedules will be determined by your tenure or "seniority" with UAL. Open work schedules are bid upon by employees based on their seniority. The most "junior" in seniority usually getting the midweek days off and the late night shifts. You will be junior until more agents transfer in with less seniority than you or more get hired in under you. You can only do better (in pay or work schedules) when your seniority can hold it, meaning after several years with the company and you get more "senior"!

If you really want the job, you will have to take the pay cut and get used to being at the bottom of the pecking order for a while. This one may hurt if you are making really great money now.....

Salary is not negotiable in a union position such as you would be taking at United. As the last poster said it is a seniority based position and you would be at the bottom of the pile for quite a while. If you are looking for travel benefits you are better off keeping your current job and setting up a vacation account and buying your tickets as everything as an airline employee is stand by and based on seniority.

$9.47 to $18.00? It's never going to happen. Don't even bother.

As a matter of fact, skip working in customer service all together. I did it for two years. It sucked.

Pardon the curiosity but why the huge pay cut?

You could try to negotiate but I don't think it will work.
