I am someone who was raised a Christian and who, at one point, faithfully and regularly attended church and bible study. I stopped attending the church that I'd attended for most of my life for this very reason. There were things going on that were in complete contradiction to what was being preached and taught. Things like 2 people, married to other people, but legally seperated, DATING one another, spending weekends at each other's houses, etc., being allowed to lead bible study and prayer services, where they admonished adultery, coveteousness, etc. I was absolutely appalled by this behavior! How was I, as a newly 'born again' Christian, supposed to handle all of the temptations thrown at me AND correct the behaviors that are frowned upon by church elders, if those teaching me weren't LIVING what they were preaching to me? I've come to realize that Christians are very judgemental of one another and are viewed as being constantly hypocritical. After doing a lot of reading, research, and evaluation of many different religions, I am still confused about many things. However, I've come to realize that being contradictory and/or hypocritical has nothing to do with religion, really. It's all a part of human nature, just as you stated in your comments following your question! We are ALL guilty of saying one thing and doing another at some point or another, EVERY DAY. I think that Christians and other religious/spiritual people are supposed to be taking a higher moral road, you know? And, as such, they are scrutanized for EVERY mistake and/or mistep that happens in their lives because people tend to somehow think that religious/spiritual people should "know better".
I think we'd all fair better if we learned a few small traits like, tolerance, humility, and patience. AND we need to realize that we are ALL human beings, no matter what religion we practice, and we're not now, nor will we ever be, perfect.
Just my opinion. GREAT question, btw. =)

Everyone is a hypocrite at one time or another. The reason why people pound on "Christians" as a whole is because of so many within Christianity that do have the "do as I say, not as I do" attitude. Especially when they quote laws from the Old Test to point out how terrible another person is, but when it's done to them they say "But I believe in Jesus, so I am not under those laws"... yet this totally destroys the idea that "God is NOT a respector of people". Yet with their own words they are saying God respects them because of their belief and took away the law for them... but because someone else doesn't believe, they are under the law. We also see those on TV, evangelists, who have no problem blaming all Non-believers for the troubles in the world "God allowed that happen cause we have Pagans in America"... this is like saying I have to be punished for a sin my neighbor did....
On an individual basis, many Christians do not act like this... at least the one's I know don't do this. But get online or turn on the TV.... And when you are reading anyone answering in the way I have above, stop and imagine for just a second that it's a Pagan or a Buddhist saying that and them tell me they don't act like hypocrites. =>

I'm Christian and I'll tell you why I think so many are called hypocrites...(remember I'm not saying all Christians are hypocrites... just the ones that do these very obvious things...)
1. Most Christians claim the bible is the Only word of God and that we should live it and read it...).
Why then are there over 50 common versions of the Bible that say 50 different things? Why then does the Bible say all scripture is profitable... not just the compilation of the Bible?
2. Christians pick and choose what parts of the Bible they want to follow.
3. The two greatest commandments in the law of Christianity are Love the Lord thy God... and love thy neighbor. I've met many Christians who are very hateful...
Too many Christians don't focus enough on being Christ-like!
Those are just very obvious ones to me, I'm sure there's more.

Most people who throw that accusation around don't have the slightest idea what being a Christian is all about. They think you're supposed to be without sin. What a joke! They think you're supposed to accept everyone's beliefs, and say they're okay. Many times they are hypocrites themselves. They don't read the Bible, but try to dictate how we should live our lives. God forbid we should read the Bible and tell them what God says about their lifestyle.

Yes, everyone's a hypocrite. Some christians are so hardcore hypocritical that it stays in others minds I guess. Kinda like lies. Everyone lies. Men lie the most, but women tell the biggest lies.

Christians are under a microscope - they are looking and hoping that we will "fall from grace" so to speak.
All people fail - so do Christians. I have heard this all my life but I look up to God - not at people - for comfort and assurance of my faith. It is a shame.

Call me crazy, but I think it's because christians are usually the 1st ones to tell someone what they should or shouldn't do, when they can't even get their own lives sorted out....despite having the magic answer to life.
