abs =automatic brake system. basically each wheel has a serrated ring on it ,that is picked up by a sensor on each wheel hub. when you brake and the wheels stop turning the sensor picks up the lack of rotation of the wheel . an ECU unit then allows the brake line to that wheel to reduce braking pressure. which in turn then allows the wheel to start rotating again. this basically does in effect the same same as you pumping the brake on and off .only much quicker.this on off effect allows you to stop quicker, steer whilst braking and not skid. i dont think i deserve 2 thumbs down

ABS means Antilock Braking system. Before the invention of abs,car wheels used to lock up during emergency hard braking, this causes the driver to loose directional control and better manouverbility of the car so the car eventually sway into a a ditch. ABS, ensures that the wheels dont lock even in extreme hard braking, while keeping the specified stopping distance the steering wheel can be controlled to avoid skidding and other obstacles being hit. This feature is possible through various electronic sensors and actuators managed by an onboard electronic control module. In the event of ABS failure the brakes will still work without any problems and so safety of the oc
upant is guaranteed!

ABS is a very mis-understood thing. What ABS does is keep the your wheels from locking up in certain situations. It will stop the car in less distance under panic stops or on surfaces that one might slide on, gravel, ice, wet roads, etc.
It does this by using speed sensors like others have said once it detects a wheel locking up it starts to pump the brakes to keep it from locking up.This also allows you to keep control of the car.
Lots of people think it makes the car stop better under normal conditions it does not. 99% of the time it does not come on.And when it does stopping distance are not improved by much so do not count on them to stop you from 70 mph in 5 feet.

Anti-lock brake system.
There are sensors by the wheels that measure the wheel speed. When the brakes are applied, and one wheel locks up, the sensor will determine this and actuate a module that will pulse the brakes on that wheel to help prevent it from locking up and having you skid out of control. Basically, that's how they work.
