The Day After.
The frightening story of the weeks leading up to and following a nuclear strike on the United States. The bulk of the activity centers around the town of Lawrence, Kansas.
BTW, "Schindler's List" is probably more depressing, but I consider it boring.

For something a little older and more obscure, try "Seconds" (1966) starring Rock Hudson, directed by John Frankenheimer.
Can't guarantee you won't find it boring, as it's fairly slow paced by todays standards. Definitely scores on the depressing front, interesting premise as well.

The Bridges of Madison County starring Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood.
She felt alive for the first time in her life but did not want to risk hurting her kids and husband. Clint Eastwood dies and his lawyer sends Meryl everything that meant anything to him and wants his ashes thrown off the Bridge where they met. She goes to all the places they went during their four day whirlwind love affair every year on her birthday. That movie pulls on my heartstrings everytime I see it.
