It basically is an average to gauge how a student is doing academically. They can be caluclated differently by different institutions but 4.0 is usually considered a perfect GPA (all A's).

A = 4.0
B = 3.0
C = 2.0
D = 1.0
F = 0.0

Multiply the number of credit hours times the grade point. Hence, a 3 credit hour class with an A in it, would be 3 * 4 = 12. Then, divide by the number of credit hours. So, 12 / 3 = 4.0. You do this for all of your classes. In the end, you will have a number to the hundreth decimal point (0.00) that shows your grade point average (GPA) for your semester, year, etc.

A in 1 credit hour swimning class = 1 * 4.0 = 4.0
B in 3 credit hour english class = 3 * 3.0 = 9.0
C in 3 credit hour history class = 3 * 2.0 = 6.0
C in 2 credit hour french class = 2 * 2.0 = 4.0
B in 3 credit hour algebra class = 3 * 3.0 = 9.0

Sum total is 32, divided by number of credit hours of 12 hours. 32/12 = 2.67 . That would be your GPA, 2.67.
