There are good shops and restaurants.
I had to kill 8 hours there a week ago and did this:
Ate dinner at a wifi sandwich bar, did email and some answers, shopped for a bit. Then I grabbed a coupla beers from the 7-11 inside, made a table out of my luggage and watched a movie on my computer. The time went by a lot faster than I thought.
I'll have to do it all again at the end of next week. If you see someone that looks like me, say hi - maybe it is me, lol :)
Good luck!

Unless you forgot to buy a present for someone, I wouldn't buy much at the airport shops, they're all pretty much overpriced, even the cigarettes and liquor can be purchased in Bangkok for less, but you can always look around. There are Thai massage facilities there, which is a good way to kill time, and if you don't mind spending a little money there is a pay private lounge where you can relax, eat and watch tv, I believe it's called Louie's. A good tip to avoid the overpriced restaurants and snacks there is to go down to the bottom level and as you face the terminal, on the far right side is a Thai Food Court where you can get decent Thai food for around US $1.00 (35-40 Thai baht) a plate. Otherwise, it's much like any other big airport, there's always a lot of pretty girls to look at, have a good trip.

Hmm... on your way to Bangkok? You must not be traveling from the States because you'd land in Hong Kong before you got to Bangkok, unless the map has changed since I went to the Far East. But, if you do land at the airport in Bangkok you'll want to stay there, and I'm afraid it's probably like every other airport in the word: restaurants and bars. I would find a restaurant serving authentic Thai food. There's nothing like a great fiction novel to pass the time, I usually read books set in the countries I am visiting and if you haven't read James Clavell's Noble House then you are in for a treat. It's set in Hong Kong and it's fantastic. have a great trip

At the end of February I spent over 9 hours wandering around Suvarnabhumi Airport waiting for a connecting flight, and I couldn't get internet access for my wireless laptop or a 6 hour room because nothing was finished! I hope it is by now though. Although I hadn't slept for about 40 hours before I even got there, I spent the time wandering up and down the concourses (good exercise and kept me awake), drank a fresh coconut in memory of the stopover in Bangkok on the inbound trip, and had a last real (well, airport good) Thai curry. The shops have all the same stuff in each one, so you see one, you've seen them all. King Power have really cheap duty-free though, so stock up! I wanted to pass the whole time in the Entertainment area, like a huge arcade, but it wasn't built, hence the restless wandering through sheer boredom. I recommend you make up missions for yourself to achieve (if you can't read due to lack of concentration), like finding a shower, or how to get from one level to another. Exciting stuff.

They have a wonderful shopping area that is duty free. Lots of good cigars and liquor that you can't buy in the United States. Other than that, it could be time to take in a good meal and a nap at the gate. If you have a laptop with wireless capability, you can net surf too.

Visit the King's Power duty free shops. They have an excellent collection of Thai handicrafts and other traditional stuff such as local sweets, dried fruits etc. And of course, there is a wide selection of bars and restaurants.

take taxi to the city, shopping, have haircut, or thai massaging. You may check for Thai massage services at the airport but it's better for you to take taxi to the city and spend 3 hours doing interesting things (spare 1 - 2 hrs for travelling to the city). I alsways do this when I have to hang around at Narita airport on the way to the US.

Get a pear. Then run through the airport and in a loud voice, threaten to pull the stem.
