Remember that throughout the medieval period most families did not have a coat of arms as those were limited to knights and nobility (well knights being on the lower end of nobility). Also remember that many surnames were derived from the occupation of the person i.e. barber, tailor, smith, goldsmith etc, these would indicate that the family was a trade family and not nobility and thus would not have a coat of arms.

Having said that, there is an heraldry college/organization in England, where you can research the recognized coats of arms and apply to have one created for you.
