I know its nice to get a tip, and I use the change as a test. anytime we order pizza, or chinese or anything, I give them exactly 20 CENTS more then the bill, right when they ask for the money. If that take it (which almost everyone does) thats all they get. If they wait, count it out, and give back the change, they get a 5-10$ tip, depending on time, heat of pizza, and attidude of course. >.>

But whats with that, why dont you count the money you are handing and give back the change?
You didnt earn a tip for driving o my house and handing me a pizza, thats your JOB, you dont get a tip for sending a file to your boss if thats your job, right?

So I dont get it, why do some delivery people take a tip out on thier own? It's rude, technically its illegal because it's thieft, and it just plan irks me, so I had to waste the 5 points >.>.

lol, you people (most of you) are damn ignorant.

I worked as a delivery person.

They pay you compansation for gas when your deliver.

you are only suposed to take ONE delivery at a time. (anyways, now they have those heated cases, so hot pizza is NOT one of the big concerns

Also, there is a differnce between waiting tables, and driving to a house and knocking on the door.

GracieM-
what country are you talking about?

it doesnt matter what job you have in the usa, what state either for that matter. you have to earn at least 5$ an hour, most state start you at 6, I worked as a waitress/hostess/table cleaner/ advertiser for sushi ninja out in Or, USA, minimun wage,(7.25)
I was the ONLY empolyee other then the owner. he cooked, did the paperwork, and did the last 2hours by himself (small town, not too much dinner rush)

but otherwise, I was working, taking order, running them back to him, taking another order, running it back, having a kid dump over the wasbi stand, cleaning that up, taking out the trash, washing my hands after, then having to take out a 160$ order, to 2 people, and not getting a penny as far as tips go. I had one group of teens come into the resturant and move ALL the tables and set up a damned game system to the tv, driving out other customers, who had to be refunded, warn the kids 1/2/3 strikes you're out, cops got called, stress

Gracie- I had never heard of a company that used that, I know I would have gotten to count tips, if I itemized, but they've always been extra in the states I've lived in, (pa, or, cali, NJ and nyc).

Also, it may be the case out there, but not in the states I've been in, tips have always been EXTRA a bonus, not something you deserve, but something you have to earn. Also, I think its because of where I live, but its rare that waitresses are the ones who are raising families, out here (pa atm) its mostly high school teens who want some extra money that mommy and daddy wont give them. The people who have families have better jobs, or are dependant on welfare. If you ask me, the people in pet stores should be offered tips too, like my sister, she stopped a lady from buying a product for her dog because my sister knew that breed had troubles with choking on the product. That deserved a tip. But what did it get her? Her coworker tried to report her sabotaging a product and stopping a sale

because they expect to be tipped. It is weird, food people get tipped. I used to wait and bartend, some people wouldn't tip at all. The worst person to tip would be a doorman. That is a joke.

I'm not sure about delivery drivers, but waitresses usually make $2.01 and hour plus tips. Not much of a "salary" for the hard work they do. And if you think waitressing is a breeze, try it sometime.

As for delivery drivers, they are using THEIR car, THEIR insurance, THEIR gas to get your pizza to you as fast as they can. Since they probably have other deliveries to make before going back to the store, they have to HURRY so the next person's pizza gets to them hot also. They don't have time to count out change unless you specifically ask for it.

My advice is stop playing games with them. Give them the money due for the food, and a nice tip on top of that. You'll continue to get good service if you do.

No its rude not to tip. I have never seen a person do what you have explained. And yes they do earn a tip for driving to your house and handing you a pizza that is their job and also in the description they only make 3.00 an hour because they get a 10% tip from all the customers witch never happens. I don't know what you do for work but I do kind of get a tip when i send a file to my boss I get a good job or nice work. If I do good job then I get a raise. Delivery people don't get raises they have to rely on tips.

Maybe it's more of a regional thing- here is so Fla, the delivery people I've dealt with always seem to count out the change,,,,,, but in fact I have a good idea of the total, add a few bucks, and as they start to count, I say "keep the change".
Lots of people stiff them on tips, so likely they try to hedge their bets and assume you want them to keep the change, but they'd give it back if a customer wanted it. I think it's a crummy job, and give them credit for wanting to improve their finances doing something I surely would not want to do, and I think you should lighten up a bit, or go pick up your own food :)

if bill is 5.10 and you paid 5 .70 he would look to change and say thank you
if you paid 6 he would try to be polite and ask you for 10 cents in order to give you back the dollar then it is up to you
if you paid 5.20 5.30 5.40 5,50 5.60 5.70 you must wait nothing he will have the impression that you arranged it for him
2 some 100 years ago i was cheff in resturant
the time the waitress took 2.50 lbs a week
i used to take 17 and 18
3 tip to delivery guy is more important than restaurant payments( wages) they know and remember who tipped well and who did not
so they just ran away from tipless delivery
each one try to send it to the other especially to knew guy

Umm... if the food is hot and the order correct and it arrived in a timely manner then why not stop wasting your time with your silly 20 cent test and just give them their tip?

Most delivery men do their best to correctly count but a lot of the time they depend on their customer to let them know how much they've given them and how much they'd like back. They are slaves to the clock and their delivery routes. They don't have time to play in your little petty social experiments.

Just let them know, "Here is a $20.00. I'd like 4 dollars back please. Please keep the difference as your tip." They can fiddle with the bills and cash out once they get back to the restaurant.

Meanwhile you wanting them to count and catch a measly 20 cents has someone else's meal downstairs in his car getting cold and has the driver making a mental note about what an anal b*tch you are which he'll tell the restaurant about the next time he returns,... and they'll put a flag on your address,.... and all your future orders you'll have to do a saliva check on.

Get over it and be direct and stop wasting time.

If the bill comes out to xx.79 cents, do you really give xx.99 cents? Not giving an exact dollar amount sort of implies that you intend to tip exactly 20 cents. If you have the next rounded dollar up, perhaps you'd have a point. But even then, the custom is to give the bill plus the tip and if you want something back to say so right then and there. For instance if the bill was 16.50 and I gave 20, I'd say please give me back $2...else he should expect to keep the full 20.

i have the same two delivery people. and they both kbow that the money i hand them is all thiers. I don't know your situation but when i place my order they give me the total. So i can make the proper change being at home it should be easy to do. the delivery people need to have the least amount of money on them ....it is a dangerous job...so make your change and give it to them. if it really bothers you go get your pie yourself and dont use the EXTRAS your pizza shop offers. Besides it is probably a someone who is working a second job or a student give em a break for goodness sake.

I'm a server and it's people like like you that can really make my job stink sometimes! Do you have a job? Because with so much time to think up little games like this, it must not be a very hard one. Just give the guy a tip, he's probably trying to support his family!

the delivery guys will round up in the interest of time and hassles. most ppl dont want to sit there while they count out the change, so therefore most ppl hand them the entire amount with the tip included and say "keep the change."

if you hand them the total that includes loose change, they automatically assume they are not getting a tip, or most likely assume their tip will be the loose change that they are wasting time to count out. if they are starting to count out the change they most likely expect you are going to say keep the change, not whip another 5-10 bucks, becuase most ppl do not do this.

i suggest you stop doing this otherwise they are bound to remember you and give you some extra "toppings" or "special sauce" on your pizza.
