Yo, Guam is a US territory. lots of the different bases which you stated are furnish and logistical hubs that enable the militia to get from ingredient a to point out b. some are strategic. There are problems with Al Qaeda so for this reason the areas in the middle East and S.W. Asia. we are in a position to maintain a watch the two on Cuba and Venzuela with the backside on Cuba. The Korean conflict never ended - there has merely been a give up fireplace, so we are there to make certain that the North continues to be the place that is think to stay. Britain additionally has distant places bases, why in the international might they elect to bypass to Montana? with the aid of the way, we don't do as we love. We sign a settee settlement (status of Forces settlement) that outlines what we are in a position to and can't do. that is not a loose for all and in maximum situations we make a contribution to the community economic equipment.

Reply #3: I don't know WHAT they are teaching you all in school these days. We did keep constabulary forces in Germany and Japan for years to keep things stable while those countries were rebuilding (and we poured GOBS of US money into that rebuilding). We stayed in Europe because of the Communist threat from the USSR which was more than just Russia, it was a gob of republics they over ran and they took over all the little Eastern European countries that they chased out of Germany such as Poland, Czechoslovakia (which is Czech Republic and Slovakia that they forced together as one country), Yugoslavia (which was another conglomeration of tiny countries such as Bosnia, Herzogovenia, Macedonia, Kosovo, and Slovakia that they forced together). Not to mention them owning East Germany until less than 20 years ago. I guess since most of you weren't born until after the German reunification, and they only teach history in school up to the VietNam war, some of you don't know it was a divided country for 50+ years. You want to talk about occupation, you haven't seen forced occupation until you read what those countries went through under Communist rule. Korean people may want us to leave sometimes, and the Japanese on Okinawa, but their government knows that China is just over the mountain and tried to take over their country over 50 years ago.
The countries that we have bases in asked us to stay. There are Status of Forces agreements with those countries as to how many troops we can have, what we can do there, that we pay 'rent' for the land we use and that we have to hire a set number of citizens of those countries to work on those military bases. The locals around some of those bases make a pretty good income of the soldiers. THe old Communist Bloc countries are making a big play to our government to get us to move bases there out of western Europe because they know they can make a tidy bundle out of the deal. Our government is looking at it because we pay Germany, where we have the most bases, a major chunk of change to have bases there and our facilities are getting so old they are eating up money to renovate. It would be cheaper to build new bases in Eastern Europe.
Right now those bases in Europe are also closer to the tensions in the middle east than our own country and given that no Middle Eastern country is going to give us a location to set up bases the size of the ones we have in Europe. If we set up austere bases in those former communist countries and republics like Azerbajan, it puts us even closer to Iraq and Iran.

England has Bases all over the world too such as Germany etc the Navy also have one in Washington. Its just that the Americans are on a much larger scale than the rest of the military!!

The reason they still have bases there in 2007 is the same reason as they had bases in ww2 you just never know what stunt they are going to pull!! I grew up right next door to a US airforce base in England. They will contiune to have these bases around europe many have closed etc but they are currently building new bases in other parts of europe god help the men/women that get stationed there i have been there and believe me its grim!!

The only country that has bases in other nations? Did I read that correctly?

Where are you getting your misinformation from? The US is NOT the only nation with military bases elsewhere.

What about:
The United Kingdom (In Germany, Indonesia, and Iraq)
Russia (all over the former Soviet Union)
Cuba (all over Africa, the Caribbean, and South America)
China (in Tibet and Mongolia)
France (all over Africa)

Other countries do have bases in foreign nations, its not just the US.

Britian, Germany, France, Russia all have bases in foreign nations.

If there was a purpose for a foreign nation to have a base in the US, then they probally would get permission.

But I cannot really think of a purpose for any nation to have a base inside America.

We established many of the bases you refer to after WWII and Korea. They were kept because they allowed us to station troops closer to where the fight may break out. The bases in Europe are mostly NATO bases now with a heavy international presence. We are there to defend our allies.

Now here is a question for you? Where would you rather go to war if you had to? In our backyard or some one else's?

Sarah T, monkey and gregpasq are 100% correct. That renders this Question incorrect, and therefore absolutely meaningless. Those like leet and I Hate Liberals #3 are also entirely wrong.

When research is shoddy and people talk outside of their field of experience, bad judgements and bad statement are what you get.

EDIT: The Australians maintain a permanent mission at Fort Bragg. The Japanese have an annual presence in Yakima, Washington State. Other nations share our infrastructure, and we theirs. When we have bases overseas, we ar bound by SOFA agreements. Yes, it is true that we have the most installations abroad. Your ORIGINAL POINT was that America was the ONLY NATION with instllations abroad - which was easily proven wrong.

By the way, Cuba fought a nasty, brutal, lengthy war in Namibia and Angola against the South Africans. Go read on that. Yes, they had a major presece prior. It's a much more limited role now.

And if you don't understand why we have bases abroad, you don't understand geopolitics. It's as simple as that.

Well, because it's not true. Britain has at least one base in Gremany and have a presence in Malaysia, Northern Ireland, Cyprus, Gibraltar. France has bases all over Africa, and at one time the Soviet Red Army had bases all over the Communist Bloc...

The US doesnt have bases stationed in random areas, they were all put there for a specific reason. You have Germany, Italy, and Japan to make sure they dont pull what they did in WWII. Britain and France for the same reason, being able to take out Germany fast if they would try something again. You have the one in South Korea over the Korean War so they can push back N Korea when they try to take over South Korea again.

They ALL have reasons, the US didnt just show up at the door saying they were making a base there.
