There's a saying I've heard that, in England, you are never more than 5 yards away from a rat. The measurement may have been different, I can't actually recall the exact figure. But I was wondering if there was a similar measurement for spiders as I see spiders ALL the time but rarely a rat!
Just curious.

I've never measured that, interesting as it may be. However, I can attest, that they always manage to find me, and the biting kinds find me irresistible. I, in turn, hate them with a passion, and wish they would keep away and dine on insects rather than myself.

I would think that we may be close to spiders all the time without really realising it. Of course there may be some tell tale signs such as webs, no flies, I am often finding spiders in the bathroom. I guess it might depend on their food supply if they cant find anything they would go elsewhere. They wont live in hostile areas and exploit any nooks and crannies so we might not see them even if they are close by. Sheds are a good place as they wont be disturbed as much in a house. They are good to have around as they get rid of other pests.
They dont swim so cant survive near water.

Measures for a spider are not at all like that. Every day hundreds of people are bitten by spiders. Most of the time, you can spot a spider just by looking in your back yard. Rats are afraid of humans, so they scatter at the sound of your feet quicker, that's why you can never get close to one.

I've got oodles of spiders in my yard and one parked on the ceiling of my bedroom that I can't reach to remove.

I garden for wildlife, and the spiders are an integral part of that system. I'd guess that I'm always within 12 feet of a spider.

And they're great to photograph. I've got two shots that stand out, and if and when the opportunity presents itself I'll get more photos for my collection.

Personally, I'm usually about five feet from a spider when at home. I encourage daddy long legs to live in each room (they usually can be found in a corner). They help reduce the number of other bugs in my residence.

As far as rats go, I'm often within a foot of one. I own a pet albino rat and he likes to follow me around the house.

I can be 10 miles away from a spider, I can be 10 inches away from a spider, but I haven't even heard the rat one at all.

I also agree I see spiders everywhere, but hardly a rat (well, I see two-legged rats all the time)

There well may be an exact figure but, I haven't seen as many spiders since before last fall!

I have wondered why, and am a little worried but hey!

it is somewhat dependent on where you are. in a typical garage there are an incredible number of spiders. also out in a garden or woods. there's a good chance in the woods that your spiders are under 1 foot from you. in your garage 1-2 feet. however they are everywhere. even in your house 1 to 3 foot is likely.

Nope i don't think so, because spiders can hide much easier than a rat so you never know how far they are from you, until you see it or until it bites you, bye, be careful with the spider bites :o)

Well, considering I found one crawling on me last night, I would say we are always in close proximity to spiders.

One statistics says that there are hundreds of spiders per acre of land.

Another statistic says the average human eats 8 spiders per year in his or her sleep. I, of course, am on the low end of that average, eating NO spiders in my sleep.

But if you are seeing spiders everywhere, I say it's time to sleep with your mouth closed and call the Orkin Man.
