The laws are different in each state.
In my state you need to take a concealed weapons course which is two eight hour classes and then two hours of hands on (target practice).

First of all, to the first poster, not every firearm owner is a mass murderer. More people are killed per year by automobiles, but that doesn't mean if you drive a car you are about to go on a killing rampage.

It depends on where you live. I'm going to assume you live in the US. If not, let me know which country and I'll try to help.

Now, each state has different rules. Some states, such as New York, require you to get a permit to purchase a handgun, while others, such as Pennsylvania, only require you to get a permit (generically called a CCW License) if you wish to carry the handgun outside of your home. Still others, such as Arizona, only require a permit if you plan on carrying the weapon concealed, and allow you to carry a weapon in the open without a permit.

Now, if your state requires a permit, there is something you need to figure out, which is whether your state is "shall issue" or "may issue" in respect to handguns. In a shall issue state, so long as you don't violate any requirements to purchase/carry your handgun (i.e. you aren't a felon and other such things), you will get your license/permit. In a may issue state, the issuing officer has the discretion to deny you even if you pass all the criteria.

Most states require at least a permit to carry, but some do also require a permit or license to purchase as well. I think usually, as is the case with NY, the license to purchase is the same as the license to carry, if you get it.

If you visit the link below, you can find out more about your state. Add additional details to your question if you need more help.

You must over 21.
You cannot have any felonies on your record.
And you must have the money to purchase it.
And a valid ID or Driver License.

Do you mean a CCW? To buy a gun in my area I just walk in, sign a few forms and pay the cashier and walk out.

I think you should go for consuelling before you decide to shoot up that school.

Jim - What an idiotic comparison. Theres a very subtle difference between car related ACCIDENTS and actually going out with the intention of killing someone.

"Wat" is a handgun license? Must be something Northeastern Liberals inflict on themselves to keep from exercising too many of their Constitutional rights. In truly civilized places you pay your money and you take home your pistol, end of story.
