Do you as a manager have a right to request them to bring a doctor's note to verify they indeed where at the doctor's? I know this sounds awful, but I have caught people in the past using this excuse to get time off. Is it politically correct to demand it?

You must work in a small company. My company demands a note from the doctor or else the time off is not excuse. If you decide to do this, you will have to do it to everyone that works for you as well in the future to protect yourself from being treating one person better them the other.

I know that the Federal Government requires the employees to bring in a medical ( doctors) note when the employee has been out from work for ( 3 ) or more days. I can't say for sure just what the policy is for the private industries. I would imagine that it should be the same (3) days. then there should be no question about the employees absents from work.

You as a manger have the right to make it policy, when you call out sick, you must have a doctors note. I was a server/bartender, and I noticed a few years back that is what a lot of restaurants were doing, it cut down on the number of people calling in. Yes it is okay to demand it. Just send it out in a memo, stating that because of excess calling in, it is now policy that when you call in sick, you must have a doctors note, or you will be written up, fired, reprimanded in some fashion based on what you feel is right.

Some places of employment do that as standard policy--in other words--you must have a note with the doc's phone and signature on it.

Other places I've worked give you a certain number of sick days to begin with and you can't exceed those without getting your rear end terminated- even if you have a note. Most places have a policy for allowing extended leave of absence or not.

if it states it in the employee handbook then YES. i say use your discretion. if u suspect it you have a right to request a doctors note only if they were out for more than 1 day or if they have used all their sick days. if not then u really have no right if they have sick days available.

First off what is your company's policy? You might want to start with looking at your company employee handbook.

I think you need to ask yourself why they might want to lie to get time off as well as why you would suspect them of lying. Are you the sort of boss that they might be scared of?
