I have never stayed in either hotel. Though by reviews the Grand Sukhumvit by Sofitel(GSS) is rated 4 stars and 5 smiles by reviewers versus 4 stars and 4 smiles for Sofitel Central Plaza Bangkok(SCPB). I looked at www.asiarooms.com for the ratings.

In terms of skytrain, the GSS is a 5-10 minute walk to the Nana station of the skytrain. SCPB is probably a 15 minute walk and and 20-25 minute ride to Sukhumvit station of the subway and another 10 minute walk to the skytrain station, Asoke.

SCPB is maybe a 5-10 minute walk to Central Plaza. GSS is a 5-10 minute walk to Nana station, and maybe a 10 minute ride by skytrain to MBK or Siam Square.

SCPB is 3 km or about 1 mile from Chatuchak weekend market. It's closer to take the subway to Chatuchak station of the subway and walk. I think.

Depends on what your focus is. Shopping it sounds like. I stayed in April at the Chaophya Park Hotel for USD 44 per night including buffet breakfast. Nice place. Some floors are being renovated but, you cannot see the construction. I stayed on the 6th floor, very nice. For the price for 4 stars and 4 smiles. The subway station is a 7 minute walk. The ride is about 12-15 minutes to Sukhumvit Road. The saving of USD 50 per night buys alot of jeans. LOL

Good luck

I have been in the Grand Sukhumvit Sofitel, and I would rate it very high. The rooms are huge and it is one block in off Sukhumvit and close to the NANA BTS station.
