Usually, this exercise is the construction of an enclosed area known as a 'vivarium.'

Typical examples include an ant farm (a copyrighted name!), an aquarium, and terrarium (simulating a dry habitat).

Vivaria (the plural of vivarium) can be as simple as a fish in a bowl or more complicated like a sealed jar with all sorts of plants and moss, maybe even bugs.

terraiums are easy and cheap to make with moss,one plant some water,and maybe a turtle or hermit crab with a land insect.
