I never had the nerve to leave a dog outside for fear someone would take him, or he'd get loose and hit in traffic, or I'd get sued because some bratty child tryed to pick him up by the whiskers and got bit (it would take a lot to get him to bite but...). IF you aboslutly must you can try giving him a bone IF he isn't likely to end in the "bit someone" senerio protecting his bone.

Don't leave him outside the store.

Why do people do that? Do they think the dog will enjoy being left outside the shop while their owners go and buy stuff? If you want to take him for a walk, go to a nearby park or something.

Get a barking collar. They work great. They now have collars that spray water into the face of the dog every time he barks or whines. Purchased online, PetsMart, Petco, etc.

He's probably terrified with all the unfamiliar sights and sounds around him. Plus, dogs are pack animals and you are his pack leader, so he gets antsy when he can't see you. It would be kinder to leave him in secure, familiar surroundings with food, water and toys to occupy him while you go shopping. There are so few shops that allow dogs, it's surely more trouble than it's worth to take him with you.

That is kind of hard to do. He is doing that because he feels your abandoning him.
