Yes, I know, you're going to say we are not. Suspend disbelief for a moment and allow me to make my point. What if all the Christians you knew were very nice, charming, polite, laid back, easy going wonderful people that were simply a joy to be around.

Would that honestly have any effect WHATSOEVER on your choice to believe in God or to not believe in Him?

Thank you for your thoughtful answers.

Zero Cool - If you're going to answer the question at least answer it please. Would it effect your Atheism or not?

THANK YOU folks, especially to Acid Zebra and Zero Cool. You have made my point. It makes no difference how nice or how hateful or how wonderful or how stupid a Christian is. It doesn't effect your belief system at all.

SO, maybe we could all stop whining about "If only Christians weren't so hateful....." "Why can't Christians be nicer?" Waa, waa waa....
Have some milk and cookies.

Sorry Zero Cool, patience is still a lesson I'm learning. I do appreciate you filling in the rest of your answer though, thank you.

Hi Barry - No it wouldn't, which is exactly my point, thank you.

ACID ZEBRA - 296 questions in the search when I typed in Christian and hateful. You be the judge.

Zero Cool - Yes, I agree that everyone should better themselves and be nicer to people. That's not the point I'm making here. I'm saying people use the excuse that "Christians are mean" and that is why they reject Jesus. No, I am not speaking about you personally.

2007-05-15 22:49:41 · update #5

Markyyy - GREAT point you make here. I wholeheartedly agree that Christians can and DO have an affect on other Christians.

LOL, yeah Acid and nobody EVER spells Christian wrong, do they sweetie? =]

Alwayshappy - Gee, judge much? I'm so glad you know all about me enough to make a sweeping generalization about my disposition. I gave you a thumbs up for proving my point, have a lovely day!

My fiance is a Christian. She actually IS the nicest person I know.

But nope, that doesn't make me 'find god' or whatever that's called. Sorry.

But, you do have a point here, somewhat. I came to this forum to learn more about my girlfriend's religion. She also started reading some of the stuff that's posted in this section. It actually pushed her almost away from God. Reading other Christian answers made her feel truly sad, and it even went up to the point she started to doubt her faith.

I found that very sad. And you may not understand this, but even as an atheist, I'm glad she didn't completely lose her faith. But I had more to do with that, than any online Christian in this section.

So, you are right. The words of Christians can make a difference. I saw it only in a negative way, but I'm sure it could work the other way around as well. Just not on me.

We'd love them, but because they were the nicest people in the world rather than because they were Christian (though no, never in a million years would it make any difference as to whether I believed in god - evidence of god, that would be another matter). It might even encourage people to be Christians too (though there is no reason why you can't be nice without being a Christian). But Christians include some of the vilest and most hateful people in the world. They're a mix of types. Some good some bad. Until your scenario comes to pass it's moot.

The odd thing is, it's only Christians who make a claim to being nicer than everyone else (or they claim that god has judged them so and will reward them). It's the distance between that claim and the reality that gets up people's noses.

Some of them are, but they don't have any exclusive claim to it. Atheists can be nice too. Many of the people who answer here are not necessarily the best representatives of either group. Some Atheists enjoy baiting religious people, asking them difficult questions, and some Christians are going about with a chip on their shoulder anyway, so they fail to follow the Golden Rule. I grant you tho, following it is far from easy. One just about has to have the Holy Ghost to do that. So maybe not all Christians receive that divine power from on high? I don't know. I have met some nice ones, and some who really gave the rest a bad name. Same for Gays, and Blacks, and yes White ones too. I have often wondered why so many fail to practice a little common courtesy. Why to we have to fight about everything? Why do we have to get so angry and hate people of other nations and religions? Why can't we have peace? Heh, if I knew that, I could out-do Henry Kissinger and bring peace to the world. But even Jesus, the Prince of Peace, could not do that. In fact, he said, "I come not to bring peace, but a sword", and THAT was one thing he sure got right. No offence!

no...i don't believe because i just can't....i don't see any reason to believe nor any evidence....how can i force my mind to believe in something that i just can't?

all the hindus i have met are really nice people and some are my very best friends (i'm a Buddhist btw) but that doesn't make me able to believe in their deities....

i think you're missing the basic point here....whether or not christians are nice, will not affect our non belief in God...but it would make the world very much nicer if christians didn't FORCE their beliefs on others....

you having your beliefs doesn't affect us,but we don't like people going on and on about how we should believe in those beliefs too.

"SO, maybe we could all stop whining about "If only Christians weren't so hateful....." "Why can't Christians be nicer?" Waa, waa waa...."

btw,by these sarcastic comments you're just making it pretty obvious how NOT nice you are...it's a pity that you're spoiling the reputation of christians in general like this because i have met many nice ones who are not at all likely to make silly sarcastic mockery like this.

"Alwayshappy - Gee, judge much? I'm so glad you know all about me enough to make a sweeping generalization about my disposition. I gave you a thumbs up for proving my point, have a lovely day!"

actually i don't have to know "all about you" to say that a truly nice person wouldn't mock others (especially the "waah waa waa" part).

There are christians who are very wholesome persons... look at Marten Luther King, Mother Theresa, ..... They are real exaples of what Jesus meant with his message

There are very good Hindu people too... look at Mahatma Gandhi.... He act without violance for the welbeing of others... this is the deaper meaning of Hinduism... creating harmony.

There are very good Buddhist people like the Dalai Lama. He realy acts out of compassion and loving-kindness.

There are realy good Islamitic people....

So to be a nic eand good person is not a matter of being christian alone. It is a matter of taking your faith serious and of living your life in detail in accordance to the message of that belief.

I don't think so. Though, on second though, it might! But then people are individualist equipped with their own free will. In faith, God made the first move, God let Himself be know through Prophets, and finally His only Beloved Son. That was 2000 years ago. Today, look around you, you would have to look very hard to find faith. The same faith that was handed down to us from Abraham, Jacob, and Jesus Christ.

Why do you expect that only Christian must be nicest? What is the yardstick you use to say this and that is a Christian? By name or what? Do not cheat yourself by your yardstick. It takes another question as to how a man could be gauged a Christian.

Any man can be nicest or other way. Can you say yourself that you are nicest? If it is not so, what right you have to expect others to be nicest? OR if you are nicest then you will find every one around you are nicest. Can you understand the real thing?

It's a shame you even have to ask this question, 'cause Christians should above all, be an example to the world. Let's face it. I think one of the biggest reasons a lot of people don't want anything to do with God is due to the hypocritical behavior of so-called Christians. We need to be a better example of Christ.

I've been baptised and was raised in a Baptist church ... but don't believe Christianity is the only way to salvation.

The ONLY thing I'm certain of is, God exists; and it has nothing to do with Christians. If they were accusatory evil-doers and idol worshippers, I'd still know that God is real.

The effect will be minimal. A smooth salesman does not make the product function better. A smooth liar does not make falsehood the truth.

But if it was not so hateful, chances are one will not retaliate that much either.

For example Which will you rather listen to :

a) God is imaginary, there is no proof of it's existence.
b) the F**king thing that you call god is just a fraction of your imagination created to control the mass population.
