i have tried NERO and total video converter but they take upto 6 or 8 hours to convert one feature length AVI movie.
Is there any AVI to MPEG conversion programs that can convert a 700 MB AVI in a shorter amount of time? say 1 to 2 hours or less?
i only have 320 MB of RAM and an Intel Pentium III processor on windows XP SP2 machine.

Try the "Super" program from erightsoft (do a search on this). It's a freeware program (yaaaay).
With so many options, I'd recommend that you experiment on a smaller movie file. Then when everything works, try the larger one. It seems to be a quick program but am not sure if it will cut down significantly your encoding time.

It wont really make a difference what you find to convert your movies
You need to upgrade your Computers memory if you want to increase the speed of Video Conversion.
