I have had this happen quite often of late on the FL I 4. I always try and extend extra courtesy to truck drivers. Meaning I know they need extra room can't stop on a dime always blink my intentions allow room for them to change lanes etc. Of late I have had truck drivers flash their head lights (during the day) after I pass. I asked the DH to follow me once thinking maybe a car issue they were trying to warn me about. The last thing I ever want to do is be inconsiderate to these men and women on the road.

Hi there Mia. I AM A TRUCK DRIVER. In fact right now I am sitting in the cab of my 18 wheeler on my laptop.

To answer your question, if a trucker flashes his or her lights from off to on a few times that is an indication that it is safe for you to complete your pass and get back into the right lane.

If a truck driver HIGH BEAMS you, it means you have done something wrong, like getting over too soon and not giving enough following distance.

If a truck driver is on the opposite side of the road (meaning you are going East and he/she is going West) and they flash their lights (turn them off and on) it means they are alerting you a danger ahead of you. If they HIGH BEAM you, it means you probably have your high beams on and they are telling you lower them.

In general, high beams are bad, flashing lights are good. Hope this helped!

EDIT - Oh I just thought of one more thing. If lots of trucks are flashing you as you pass them, it might be an indication that one of your headlights is out of adjustment and is causing them difficultly. The way you can check is to pull up to a wall (about 6 feet away) and turn your lights on, flash back and forth from high to low beams and see if one of the lights is higher on the wall then it's partner. Good luck!

Semi trucks are very long and it's hard for them to tell when it's safe to come over (that's why they're often still in the left lane when a car can cut to the right lane and pass). Often, semi drivers will communicate to each other to let them know that it's safe to change lanes. One will flash his lights to say it's safe to change, then the other will flash his brakes to say thank you for letting me know. I rarely get the courtesy directed at me, but i always feel special when I do.

Is this after you have let them merge ahead of you or is it just when you speed up and go around them? I am also very nice to truckers, and I have found that they will flash their lights to say thanks to you. I also know that trucks are unable to see cars unless you are behind them or in front of them the mirrors can only see a bit past the back of the truck. Maybe they remember you from the last time you helped them out?

You never know
Good Luck

If you go to pass them and you see them in your rear view mirror, flashing their lights means it's safe to get over. If they're coming at you from the opposite direction, flashing lights means there's a cop ahead, and to slow down. If they pass you and then flash their lights (not headlight obviously, but the running lights/fog lights, etc.) it means thanks for letting them over.

apparently, they are extending the same courtesy to you as they do other truck drivers. It is a signal that you have plenty of room to get over.
