There's probably always been a bit of jockeying for position, arguing that one's preferred deity/ies were better than the neighbours'. That's probably just human nature, look at how we do it with sports teams.
Before the Roman Empire made Jesus their poster child for contented submission, that all took place in a very crowded religious space -- co-existing and often competing deities were the norm. (cf Euripedes "The Bacchae", a less than sympathetic contemporary account of the rise of Dionysius in the Greek pantheon.)
Thanks to the Romans, Christianity has been the sole dominant religion in Europe and the U.S. for so long that we've forgotten this is a recent and rare phenomenon. That's one of the reasons why parts of Christianity feel so threatened by Islam.
Many religions, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Bahai and Judaism comfortably accept the validity of other religions. So it's not that everyone feels that the rest of the world is wrong, it's just that your neighbours do.

It is not Prentice - people always believe that their own is the truth. That is the nature of belief and you cannot choose to be other than you are. This is because belief is not a choice it is the result of life. A Creationist can no sooner stop believing than a atheist can believe in the existence of a god. It is possible to change your beliefs by experience and study. And this is the job of a therapist (of what ever sort).
However it is the tolerance that any person or religion shows that makes the difference. So many religions of peace use the gun and bomb to convert. Oh how peaceful and tolerant that is.

Because it is too much for our tiny human minds to accept that there could be more than one answer to the question. Most people get attached to the view that their belief system is the only correct one and all others are false. It's too bad because most faiths share basic beliefs.Yet one group will squabble with another group that shares almost identical beliefs, only differing on minor points, over which group has the truth. What a waste.

There is only one way given among men whereby we must be saved. Jesus. There is no other that paid the price for our sins. Is there?
Good works and daily prayers are not enough. These alone are as filthy rags to God.
We must first receive the cleansing that only He has to offer.
If a man confesses with his mouth and believes in his heart that God has raised Him from the dead, then shall he be saved. Only then.
There can only be one truth. These other books that came after. These books offer some other means to God. How convenient. I wish the creator would open the eyes of the billions who have chosen to follow these other books (often because thats how they were brought up).

I do not think that "everyone pretends"
I think that many things can lead to a person acting righteous or prideful - but to deny people of their opinions would I not be doing the same as they are in this case?
People do these things because they can.

Pretty ridiculous question, don't you think? If I belong to a religion and don't think it is correct, that would be asinine, to say the least.
But then you pretended to ask a question, didn't you? And I bet you pretend to be somewhat smart. Probably.
